Edmonds School District is committed to workplace diversity and aims to attract and retain employees with the right skills, knowledge, and life experiences to meet the needs of each vacancy. We encourage individuals of different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives to apply and seek those who actively embrace our equity-focused direction for the future. Whether you're working in a classroom, driving a school bus, preparing lunches, or supporting one of the many operational and administrative functions, our goal is to create socially, emotionally and intellectually safe learning environments for each student, every day!
About the Position
AVID tutorials offer a collaborative environment in which students use the inquiry process and Socratic dialogue to address points of confusion from their content classes in order to come to a more complete understanding of what they are learning. AVID Tutors will support middle school students enrolled in the AVID elective course by providing direct instructional support to students with the assistance of an AVID elective course teacher.
AVID Tutors facilitate the tutorials to ensure students are thinking critically and problem-solving using inquiry. AVID tutors serve as role models for AVID Elective students, offering appropriate opportunity knowledge about college and careers and encouraging development of student agency. Tutors delicately balance modeling skills and instruct students how to productively struggle to gain those skills, all while maintaining a unique collaborative space.
Under direct supervision of the AVID coordinator, tutors perform the following tasks:
  • Become familiar with the 10-Step AVID Tutorial process.
  • Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with students.
  • Tutor students in small study groups or individually, assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders.
  • Determine from student notes and discussions the concepts that need to be taught or re-taught.
  • Facilitate student learning in a challenging, yet supportive, tutoring environment
  • Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions.
  • Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID Teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for all AVID students to follow.
  • Participate in all required training, professional development sessions, and meetings.
  • Ongoing coaching, support, and encouragement will be provided to tutors so they feel appreciated as valuable contributors to the tutorial process.
