We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Avian Surveyor to join our team working near Garden City - Scott County, KS. As an Avian Surveyor, you will be responsible for conducting surveys and collecting data on bird populations in various ecosystems. Your primary focus will be to document the behavior, distribution, and conservation status of avian species to support environmental management and conservation efforts.

 

To excel in this role, you must have a strong passion for bird conservation, particularly eagles, and possess excellent observational and data collection skills. You should be able to work independently in remote and rugged terrain, have a keen eye for detail, and be comfortable using GPS and other survey equipment.

 

This is a challenging yet rewarding position that offers the opportunity to work in some of the most breathtaking landscapes alongside a team of dedicated conservation professionals. The position has variable hours but is expected to be 15 days of survey per month averaging 10 hours per day. The position will start the last week of November, with surveys starting December 4, 2023, and ending in November 2024, with the potential for a one-year extension. The field technician will be responsible for adhering to standardized protocols as trained by Tetra Tech staff and completing accurate data collection forms. In addition to conducting field surveys, the biologist may support other biology-related tasks as needed.

 

Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive to environmental studies within the energy industry.

 

Responsibilities:

         Conduct field surveys to monitor eagle populations and assess their habitats.

         Observe and record behavior, nesting sites, and breeding success of eagles.

         Collect and manage data on eagle demographics, including population size and distribution.

         Analyze data using statistical software to track trends and assess population dynamics.

         Contribute to the development and implementation of conservation plans for eagle populations.

         Provide recommendations for habitat management and support the preservation of critical nesting sites.

         Collaborate with research teams and conservation organizations to conduct joint studies and share data.

 

Requirements:

         B.S. Science (Biology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, etc.

         Demonstrated ability to identify local avian species, by sight and sound.

         Demonstrated ability to identify eagle species and to distinguish eagle age and species.

         Willing to adhere to all personal safety requirements associated with working in rural, isolated areas.

         Comfortable in harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain (e.g., extreme heat, high winds, all forms of precipitation)

         Ability to use a GPS unit and a tablet.

         Must be able to work with a team and independently while maintaining clear communication with Tetra Tech, Inc. staff.

         Flexibility in scheduling due to changing field conditions.

         Be physically located within a 5-hour drive to the field site near Garden City, in Scott County, Kansas.

         A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with federal regulations is required, along with a physical if needed.

         Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

         Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

         Walking requirements are up to 10 miles in a day.
