Incumbent is a student performing an hourly paid internship.
What We Do
At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering questions related to the practical design and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.
As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning (ML) to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we:

  • build real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities through solving practical engineering problems.
  • discover and define the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for robust, secure, scalable, and human-centered mission capabilities.
  • prepare our customers to be ready for the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities.
  • identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscape.

Position Summary:
As an intern in our Autonomy Lab, you will work with researchers, engineers, and developers on AI solutions that address mission challenges for defense and national security.
Duties:
  • Investigate state-of-the-art AI/ML tools and practices
  • Support prototyping of robotic systems with a focus on simulation
  • Develop and execute simulation environments to evaluate robotic systems
  • Use one or more simulation applications to define worlds and agents
  • Execute various exercises using GUI and command line interfaces
  • Generate/collect simulation data for analysis by larger team
  • Present technical findings to internal and external stakeholders

Requirements:
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree granting program.
  • Able to work an internship schedule during the summer semester.
  • Able to come on-site to the SEI Pittsburgh office.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • Candidates will be subject to a background check.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience developing and setting up simulation environments
  • Experience executing simulation exercises using GUI and command line interfaces
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++)
  • Experience with robotics simulators like Isaac Sim preferred
  • Experience with ROS preferred
  • Experience with game development (Unreal 5) is a plus
  • Ability to document and present simulation workflows
