Description:
- Heavy duty mechanical knowledge of engines through suspension.
- Performs preventive maintenance activities to vehicles and equipment including but not limited to oil and filter changes, servicing of lubricant and fluid levels, component wear inspection, and systems testing. Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, repairs, remodifications (by fabricating and welding) and related services to various types of vehicular equipment.
- Performs systems testing and diagnostics to determine cause and course of repair action.
- Replaces failed vehicle and equipment components of all complexity levels.
- Rebuilds complex vehicle and equipment components as needed.
- Performs complex vehicle body and paint repairs of moderate complexity as well as component upfit and make ready.
- Repairs include but are not limited to body panel shaping, substrate preparation, painting, metal and fiberglass fabrication, welding, body filler application and component replacement. Services vehicles and equipment as needed at garages and at off-site locations. Serves as shop supervisor in absence of shop manager. Trains lower-level mechanics. Orders parts and updates/completes work orders according to standard operating procedures. Uses tools and equipment such as electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, tire changers, bench grinders, pressure washers, hoists, jacks, and a variety of hand and power tools. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Performs housekeeping duties. Observes environmental and hazardous material procedures. Works safely and follows all safety procedures.
- Responds to complex reports of operational/condition issues with vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses problems or recurring malfunctions, chooses course of action, personally repairs or directs repair of vehicles and determines success of repair by road test or other means. Removes, repairs and/or replaces all or part of automatic and manual transmissions, brakes, suspension, exhaust, fuel, cooling and electrical systems. Utilizes technical diagnostic machines in determining vehicle failures. Uses hand tools, hoists, pressure gauges, drills, grinding wheels and factory manuals. May lead and train less skilled mechanics.
- Keeps track of repair time and reports time on work orders. Stays current on new technology.
KNOWLEDGE: Requires an Associate Degree in Automotive Technology or certification/licensing in an automotive technology program of over eighteen months (i.e., NIASE). Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. EXPERIENCE: Three years of automotive maintenance and repair experience are required. Technical automotive experience may be substituted for the above education requirement on a year-for-year basis .License: Requires a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) except in the Police and Fire Departments. In the Fire Department, a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and/or a State of Texas Inspection License are preferred.
