This position will be part of the Engineering team with responsibility to lead advanced design techniques and application of technology for accelerated Design for Manufacturing (DFM). As an integral part of product and advanced manufacturing equipment and process development, the Automation Design Engineer will support with research, design, build and test of complex electro-mechanical component parts, processes, and systems. This role will collaborate with Manufacturing and Design teams identifying areas for improvement, maintaining high levels of manufacturing and product quality, designing new processes, as well as ensuring cost-efficiency and conformance with regulatory standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and improve existing process and equipment designs. Review and judge non-conformances. Evaluate and implement suggestions and requirements from suppliers, customers, and manufacturing.
  • Manage process equipment and component design projects within budget and schedule requirements.
  • Create conceptual and detailed designs for parts, assemblies and diagrams assuring that designs meet specification, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Confirm product performance by designing, performing, and documenting engineering tests.
  • Specify components and assemblies using 2D drafting, 3D modeling software and text descriptions, as well as creating detailed and precise schematics,
  • Produce comprehensive documentation for automation projects, including bills of materials, system specifications, user manuals, and technical drawings.
  • Research and select suppliers. Maintain supplier relationships.
  • Prepare feasibility studies and thorough cost justification for projects.
  • Plan and implement capital projects.
  • Work with subject-matter experts and operations leaders to document business processes and develop supporting instructional materials. Collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to design an effective plan to communicate and implement the new processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, or related field.
  • 7 years industrial manufacturing experience, preferably in a process-oriented related industry.
  • 4+ years of experience in the design of automated manufacturing equipment
  • Some manufacturing operations experience required such as Foundry, Machining, Welding,
  • Assembly, Test & Inspection, or Marking & Packaging processes.
  • Computer skills must include Microsoft Office applications, database applications and 3D mechanical design, Solidworks preferred.
  • Experience integrating automation building blocks (e.g., servos, sensing technologies, linear motion devices, pick & place mechanisms) into custom design solutions.
  • Experience in metrology measurement techniques, precision measurement, dimensional analysis, and accuracy assessment.
  • Exceptional problem solver with strong analytical skills coupled with the ability to communicate complex analyses and concepts to all levels of the business team.
  • Flexibility to deal with multiple project priorities and evolving deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills, documentation, and attention to detail
  • Highly motivated, self-starter capable of working and delivering results on own initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform with high levels of ambiguity and complexity.
  • % Travel is minimal. Have ability to travel as needed to perform the basic duties associated with this position.

OTHER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experienced building prototype and construction of automation systems using cross-functional teams. Desire to be "hands on" in the design, build, and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Subject matter expertise with one or more automation applications such as:
    • Inspection technologies (vision, laser, etc.)
    • Robotic integration with metalworking, assembly, or inspection processes.
    • Automated material handling systems, conveyors, or indexers.
    • Advanced marking and packaging technologies.
  • Experience with Labview software is desirable.
  • Some knowledge with Industrial Electrical/Electronics. Experience with automation controls and electromechanical systems design & development preferred,
  • Experience with formal continuous improvement tools such as 5S and other Lean Manufacturing concepts, PPAP, creation of Mfg. Control Plans, Value Stream Mapping and Cell layout techniques helpful.
