Job Summary:
The Body Technician performs repairs and replacements to all district vehicle body and related components. The incumbent checks and repairs damaged bodies and body parts of school buses according to repair manuals, using hand tools and power tools. The incumbent also examines damaged vehicles and estimates cost of repairs. The incumbent is required to provide their own tools.
Essential Functions:
  • Repairs or replaces necessary components of vehicles such as vehicle glass (windshields, door, side and rear), mirrors (door and rear view), body panels (doors, fenders, hood, bin doors, rocker panels, etc.), handles, locks, latches, hinges, bumpers, bumper covers, grills, exterior lights, weather stripping, decals and emblems, power and manual windows and lock assemblies, interior floor mats, dash mats, door panels, interior handles, seat belts, glove box latches, carpet and provides service to air bags.
  • Removes upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window-and-seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fenders.
  • Positions block against the surface of the dented area and beats the opposite surface to remove dents using a hammer.
  • Provides district and department identification for buses.
  • Washes, repairs (which may include fabrication or replacement of parts), removes rust, applies fillers and sands to repair area as appropriate.
  • Prepares surface masks, matches colors, primes, seals, and paints, applies decals and recycles paint products.
  • Performs adjustments to basic automotive electrical wiring and makes minor frame adjustments.
  • Estimates cost of repairs to buses and other fleet vehicles and obtains bids where outside insurers are involved.
  • Makes paint repairs and paints (masks and preps) entire vehicles due to paint flaking, accidents, aging, and rusting. Sands to removes rust, applies and sands body fillers, matches colors, paints (priming and sealing).
  • Fills depressions with body filler, using putty knife.
  • Removes damaged panels and grills, using wrenches and cutting torch.
  • Bolts or welds replacement parts in position, using wrenches or welding equipment.
  • Straightens bent automobile frames, using a pneumatic frame straightening machine.
  • Files, grinds, and sands repaired surfaces, using power tools and hand tools.
  • Refinishes repaired surface, using paint spray gun and sander.
  • Aims headlights.
  • Paints surfaces after performing body repairs.
  • Repairs or replaces defective mechanical parts.
  • Maintains records of work orders and purchases for the body ship.
  • Maintains an open purchase order for needed parts and supplies.
  • Assists with department budget preparation.
  • Oversees subcontractor work on bumper repair, windshield replacement, sandblasting and protective coatings.
  • Occasionally will help cover work in the bus shop such as field calls, after hours work, and some mechanic work.
  • Shares responsibility for shop cleanliness and maintaining OSHA standards.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must be willing to become familiar with Utah Highway Patrol, federal, state, and local policies regarding school buses.
  • General computer skills (Excel, Windows, email, etc.).
  • Welding skills (mig, oxy/acetylene, plasma cutter).
  • Sheet metal breaking and sheering.
  • Upholstery skills; including, but not limited to:
    • graffiti removal,
    • vandalism repair,
    • seat cover replacements; and
    • building and sewing upholstery following patterns.
  • District and State Procurement Policy - be willing to learn.
  • Decision Making and Problem-Solving Skills.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively alone and with others.
  • Ability to maintain shop records, parts inventory, invoices, etc.
  • Proficiency in using measuring tools and measurement.
  • Basic Math Skills.
  • Knowledge of personal protection equipment (PPE) and OSHA safety standards.
  • Ability to operate paint booth and painting equipment.

Required Education, Training and Qualifications:
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires one year of formal training in vehicle body work plus air bag certification as outlined in the district apprenticeship program.
  • Requires a commercial driver's license (CDL) with school bus endorsement or willingness to obtain such a license.
    • The district will provide training if necessary.
    • Applicant must have a minimum of a class D driver's license at time of hire.

Required Prior Experience:
  • Requires one of the following:
    • completion of a three year, closely monitored, apprenticeship as outlined in the district apprenticeship program with demonstrated competence; or
    • a minimum of two (2) years of successful experience in autobody repair.

Note: The District reserves the right to make specific requirements for this position, however, when prior work experience has been evaluated to be particularly pertinent, some exchanges between training and experience might be authorized.
Assigned Decision Making:
  • Makes decisions as to tools, materials, and equipment needed for each work order.
  • Assigns work to hourly helpers and monitors their performance.
  • Makes repair/replace decisions.
  • Determines quality of parts in making purchase decisions.
  • Determines work that must be subcontracted in conjunction with shop foreman.
  • Authorized to purchase up to $500 on purchase cards.

Non-Supervisory Interaction:
  • Interacts and collaborates with employees, board members, patrons, vendors, administrators, and secretaries in schools.
  • Works with various department secretaries, coordinators, managers, and directors.
  • Works positively and collaboratively with District departments including administrators and secretaries.
  • Strong interpersonal skills along with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people.
  • Able to create and support a team-based environment within the program and department.

Working Environment:
  • Work takes place in a typical workshop environment.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
  • May work inside, outside, hot and cold, wet, dirty, dusty, greasy/oily environments.
  • May work on scaffolding, ladders, and step stools.
