Departmental Objective

This includes providing technical assistance and guidance and developing and implementing new solutions to improve system efficiency and effectiveness. Our team works closely with stakeholders across the University to ensure that our services align with the community’s needs and contribute to the institution’s overall success.

Purpose of the Position
This position will help maximize the value derived from the classroom and conference room audiovisual systems and report directly to the Manager of Technical Support Services. This individual will work directly with the IT support staff and clientele to support and maintain CNU classroom technology, other meeting room A/V technologies, and digital signage display systems. Their responsibilities include assisting faculty, student users, and local department staff with instructional technology infrastructure.

The position provides technical support to ensure the proper operation, maintenance, monitoring, testing, and repair of networked AV equipment, CNU classroom lecterns, and AV control systems and communicate those changes and work to end users. The specialist will also be responsible for loading programs onto Crestron control processors, touch panels, routers, audio DSPs (Crestron and others), and Crestron peripherals to support instructional technology in the Christopher Newport University classrooms. Moreover, the specialist will review requirements and help design classroom AV systems, build/install new classroom AV systems, perform tests and pilot installations of viable technologies, and produce the necessary documentation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position
  • Knowledge of room audiovisual design, installation principles, and best practices for scaling and supporting campus-wide audiovisual infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of AV systems, including AV racks, microphone systems, web conferencing systems, displays, projection systems, cabling, etc.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and connect equipment based on drawings.
  • Ability to manage and monitor multiple classroom and conference systems through a monitoring control system.
  • Ability to troubleshoot classroom and conference audio/video equipment and apply diagnostic procedures.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, record, and report classroom and conference performance data/statistics to inform repair/maintenance priorities.
  • Ability to follow through on assigned tasks and projects.
  • Ability to inform patrons and less knowledgeable staff about operating classroom and conference equipment through extensive documentation, knowledge base articles, and department-specific outreach efforts.
  • Ability to develop and apply technical procedural documentation.


Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Education Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.


Experience Required:
  • Experience managing and programming professional audio/visual equipment.
  • Experience with incident logging or ticketing systems.
  • Experience building documentation and training materials.

Additional Consideration(s)
Education Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related technical field; or high school diploma or equivalent and work experience that equates to a Bachelor’s degree.
  • AVIXA CTS certification.
  • Crestron certifications.
Experience Preferred:
  • Experience in an enterprise or higher education technology support environment, including implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting audiovisual and classroom and/or conference room technology.
  • Experience managing and programming professional audio/visual equipment, including Crestron Digital Media systems, and using monitoring systems.
  • Computer (preferably Windows) management knowledge and experience.
  • Experience with Crestron’s XiO management system or other monitoring systems relative to Crestron Audiovisual equipment.
  • Considerable technical expertise in operating, maintaining, and repairing individual classroom and conference systems, including touch panel design, firmware updates, and component repair and replacement.

Salary Information
Starting at $47,373 to commensurate education and experience.
