Assistant/Associate Professor and Attending Veterinarian

About Fort Smith and the Arkansas River Valley
Fort Smith is a vibrant community of around 90,000, with a low cost of living and ample recreational opportunities. Located in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley at the foothills of the Ozark mountains, Fort Smith is nestled between the Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests. JOB SUMMARY
The ACHE Assistant/Associate Professor and Attending Veterinarian will direct the centralized animal care and use program and facilities at the ACHE Research Institute Health and Wellness Center. The individual will fulfill all legal and regulatory requirements of that position. This includes serving as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and advising the Institutional Official on all matters pertaining to the health and welfare of the research institute animal facility as required by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare - NIH. They will provide professional expertise and advice to investigators and others on matters related to all use of laboratory animals in biomedical research. Additionally, they may choose to participate or collaborate on research projects as fitting of a faculty member of ACHE. The AV will consult with PIs to provide guidance on procedures and drugs to minimize pain and distress. As director, they will be responsible for full staffing of the animal facility and maintaining all maintenance of core equipment within the facility. They will also assist the PI and research or animal care staff by providing training in humane methods of animal maintenance and experimentation. The AV is also a voting, appointed member of the ACHE IACUC as designated by the Vice President of Research.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain working knowledge of Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare – NIH as well as AAALAC accreditation requirements.
• Ability to manage and provide full PI oversight of OLAW requirements and functions.
• Ability to develop and compose a full research management program.
• Provide routine management, care, and oversight of rodent animal research program.
• Maintain full research animal welfare oversight, and facility quality assurance.
• Serve as regular member of Institutional Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
• Other duties as assigned by the ACHE Vice President of Research or their designee.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Minimum Qualifications (Needed to do the job)
• Completion of an AVMA-accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) program
• American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or equivalent is preferred.
• License to practice veterinary medicine in a state or territory of the United States
• Possess a detailed and thorough knowledge of all US standards, Policies, and Regulations for the humane care and use of animals in research.
• Experience and thorough knowledge of all aspects of IACUC function.
• Five (5) years of experience in laboratory animal care:
• Three (3) years experience managing a team.
Preferred Qualifications
• Laboratory Animal Medicine Postdoctoral Fellowship Experience
• At least three (3) years of experience in laboratory animal medicine and/or completion of a training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine with eligibility for certification in the field may be substituted for the experience requirement.
• Arkansas Veterinary Medicine license preferred.
• Experience with AAALAC, International accredited animal care and use programs is highly preferred.

• Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office.

• May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices, conference rooms, and on occasion, to off-campus sites to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.
• May require significant travel or work away from campus.
• Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
• Frequently required to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
• Frequently required to see for purposes of reading matter.
• Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
• Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
• Frequently required to operate office and presentation equipment.
