FLSA Status: Nonexempt Original Date: Last Revision: February 2019 JOB SUMMARY: Serves as clinical Athletic Trainer II in primary care sports medicine and orthopaedic clinical setting. Specializes in the delivery of high quality health care to patients of all ages and athletes of all skill levels. Assists with the administration, supervision and evaluation of patient care and employee performance in conjunction with Program Coordinator. Uses preventative measures appropriately, provides standard immediate care procedures used in emergencies, clinical evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning. Assists Outreach Program Coordinator regarding day-to-day activities when necessary. Under the supervision of a directing physician, manages head injuries, concussions, and referrals to appropriate medical professionals to ensure optimal level of care. Promotes a safe working environment for patients, employees and others who encounter Sports Medicine needs in the community. Performs in a clinical role to deliver excellent patient care in the community/clinic setting. Responsible for clinical Athletic Trainers in clinic to ensure quality patient care and operational aspects of sports medicine EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or equivalent from a CAATE accredited program required. Work requires knowledge of the domains of athletic training: injury/illness prevention and wellness protection, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, organizational and professional health and well-being. LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: NATABOC Certification (National Athletic Trainers Association-Board of Certification) required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs appropriate patient intake for a variety of medical and musculoskeletal conditions including thorough history of condition or injury, chief complaint, assessment of pain level, completion and/or review of past medical history, family history social history and medication reconciliation. 2. Performs appropriate physical examination per patient history and chief complaint including palpation of the affected area and unaffected area, range of motion testing, strength testing / manual muscle testing / dynamic muscle testing, myotome/dermatome testing, ligamentous stress testing, or functional testing. 3. Under the direction of supervising physician, orders appropriate diagnostic testing or follow-up care including xrays, MRI, CT scan, EMG, diagnostic ultrasound, rehabilitation referrals, specialty referrals, and prescription medications. 4. Supports physicians and other clinical/ancillary staff in daily patient care in an independent post-operative clinic with a supervising provider. Performs SCAT testing exam for MD. 5. Complies with all OSHA and JHACO-issued policies and procedures. 6. Documents all aspects of evaluation, testing appropriately within the EMR. 7. Based on patient diagnosis, current activity level and patient care plan goal, collaborates with supervising physician to demonstrate home based exercises and develops plan of treatment regarding therapy exercises. 8. Develops and teaches an appropriate home exercise program: a. Appropriately choose and fit durable medical equipment b. Coordinates Clinic Supply of DME c. Coordinates with Territory manager regarding DME inventory and new products d. Contacts person for clinic regarding DME e. Inventory management f. Fabricates and applies custom splint or cast g. Serves as clinic lead for all casting and splinting issues h. Fits patient with any other rehabilitation equipment / implement (TENS, bone stim, etc.) i. Educates patient as to why any of the above or combination of the above is included in the plan of care j. Appropriately removes casts/splints 9. Prepares for and assists physician with minor procedures, including preparation of patient treatment site for the following: skin biopsies, joint injections, PRP, toenail removal, wound care, suture application / suture removal, staple application / staple removal. Triages patient messages, phone calls and questions appropriately, whether resolving issues within the scope of practice or utilizing physician, nurse triage, and other ancillary staff as needed to resolve questions. 10. Manages referrals to specialists, diagnostics tests in a timely manner and communicates both delays, and results/subsequent plan of care in a courteous, efficient, and patient-appropriate manner. 11. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve patient care and customer service. Serves as preceptor to undergraduate athletic training student interns. 12. Medical record - maintains up to date medical records in patient EMR chart. 13. Patient scheduling - completes initial/return scheduling, post-operative scheduling, physical therapy appointments, and referral scheduling. 14. Registration - PSR, Registrar. 15. Maintains inventory, orders, and manages clinical supplies. 16. WFU athletic care coordination - coordinates care with multiple MDs regarding WFU athlete testing. 17. WS Dash - coordinates with MDs and Dash ATC on patient scheduling and testing. 18. WSFCS Student care - coordinates with supervising MD and student RTP precautions. 19. Assists Program Coordinator for SMS with daily and weekly needs and meetings by attending various meetings and answering phone calls regarding clinic care. 20. Serves as clinic point person when PC is absent or away from clinic. Reviews staff weekly schedule ensuring quality coverage in clinics. Assists Program Coordinator with managerial decisions and reviews MD clinic scheduling with PC. 21. May provide backup HS/Outreach coverage when necessary. As an LAT, has the ability to assist with HS coverage if needed.
