GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Habitat and Access Specialist will perform a variety of land management practices associated with the development and maintenance of Wildlife Habitat Management Areas (WHMAs), elk feedgrounds and Public Access Areas (PAAs).
Regional positions will be located in Laramie, Pinedale, Yoder, Lovell and Saratoga Wyoming. Statewide crew positions will be located in Casper and Lander. Position duties vary by location described below, but may include irrigating (flood, gated pipe and pivot sprinklers), farming, haying, fence maintenance, habitat development, maintaining roads, parking areas, signs, hay sheds, irrigation systems, wetlands, fish and wildlife studies and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
Laramie and Saratoga:
  • Basic Carpentry of department facilities
  • Irrigation - flood and gated pipe
  • Fence construction and maintenance - wildlife and stock fence
  • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment and construction equipment to complete habitat enhancements as well as public access improvements.
  • Weed identification and control
  • Wetland management
  • Data collection of various vegetation types

Pinedale:
  • Irrigation - flood and gated pipe
  • Fence construction and maintenance - elk fence and stock fence
  • Basic carpentry - hay shed, building, horse corral repairs
  • Operation and maintenance of skid steer
  • Haying - cutting, raking, baling and stacking 3x3 size hay bales
  • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment up to 250 hp tractors
  • Chainsaw operation
  • Weed identification and control
  • Wetland management

Yoder and Lovell:
  • Irrigation - center pivots, flood and gated pipe
  • Farming - food plots, plowing, discing, drilling, mowing
  • Fence construction and maintenance - wildlife and stock fence
  • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment
  • Weed identification and control
  • Wetland management
  • ATV/UTV operation and maintenance

Casper and Lander - Statewide Crew
  • Travel across the state every week
  • Extended stays in campers
  • Farming - Plowing, discing, drilling, mowing
  • Habitat manipulation/improvement: aeration, dixie harrow, ripping, spring developments, stream restoration, Mule Deer initiative projects, etc.
  • Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment (backhoes and loaders)
  • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment up to 250hp tractors
  • Fence construction and maintenance - elk fence and stock fence

All positions:
  • WHMAs and PAAs maintenance
  • Operation of heavy equipment (tractors, backhoes, skid steers, etc.)
  • ATV/UTV operation and maintenance
  • Operation of power tools, 4x4 pickups and trailers
  • Provide outreach information and assistance to the public
  • Work on other projects that improve or develop aquatic and terrestrial wildlife habitat within the state
  • Positions could require overnight travel that require staying in campers, tents, or cabins with other personnel

Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference may be given to those with a farm or ranch background or experience related to range management, fish and wildlife resource management, and habitat development or to those with a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management, range management, ecology, biology, zoology, or a closely related field.
***Must have a valid driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge and experience in farming
  • Knowledge of wildlife management, natural resource management, range management, wetland management, and habitat management
  • Must be able to effectively and safely operate trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, tractors, ATVs, power tools, and hand tools
  • Skill in written and oral communication and in interpersonal relations
  • Ability to work alone and exercise independent judgment
  • Skill in organizing, planning, prioritizing, and managing time
  • Ability to listen, be a team player and communicate with other employees and the public
  • Knowledge of construction principles and basic carpentry.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Extended stays in the outdoors.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
  • Position will often independently work outside in all weather conditions
  • Requires strength and stamina to work in extreme outdoor conditions and pack heavy supplies to remote locations.
  • Must be able to effectively and safely operate trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, tractors, ATVs, power tools, and hand tools.
