The Assistant Director of Natural Resource Management performs advanced professional work within the administrative office and provides necessary oversight of the Natural Resource Management Division including administration, staffing, training, planning and management of BREC's Natural Resources. Responsible for coordinating and managing a variety of projects while analyzing collected data, developing management plans and protocols and assessing prescription outcomes.
Education: Graduation form an accredited 4-year college or university required; Master's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
Area of Study (major): Natural Resources, Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy or closely related field required; Natural Resource Management preferred.
Certification(s) Professional membership with NRPA. First Aid and CPR/AED Certification within 30 days of hire required; Certified Natural Resources Professional (CNRP) with NREP, Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) with NRPA and Commercial Pesticide Applicator License preferred.
License(s):Valid LA Driver's Licenserequired.
Years Relevant Work Experience: Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in Natural Resource Management or forestry with at least 3 years in supervisory capacity overseeing budget; 10 or more years related experience, at least 3 years full-time at BREC preferred.
Other Job Specifications:
- Advanced working knowledge of South Louisiana ecosystems as they relate to habitat health and species diversity.
- Knowledge of common Natural Resource Management practices in the areas of invasive species, visitor use impacts and aquatic system health.
- Knowledge of sustainable trail design and hiking/biking system planning.
- Knowledge of GIS including data collection, management and map creation and how to utilize it for system-wide planning.
- Understanding of environmental policy as it relates to land designations, mitigation and NEPA.
- Understanding of herbicide use and application including laws licenses and safety protocols.
- Ability to write plans, policies and reports from analyzed data.
- Ability to analyze and articulate BREC policies, operations and programs
- Ability to supervise and direct employees, and develop a positive, production working relationship is required.

Essential Functions and Duties:
- Supervise all operation of the Natural Resource Management section of the Natural Resource Management Division including full time professional staff.
- Oversees the operations of BREC Conservation land, implementation of management plans, primitive trail development and maintenance.
- Assists Assistant Superintendent in budget preparation, expense monitoring, long range planning and budgeting activities.
- Assists the Assistant Superintendent in establishing section priorities, long range strategic planning and exceed annual performance measures.
- Assists with planning and park development and land acquisition.
- Communicates directly with Assistant Director of CORE and develops a working relationship which strengthens education and programming possibilities in Natural Resources across the parish.
- Oversees all Resource Management operations and data management of GIS and flora and fauna inventories.
- Uses acquired data to develop management plans and protocols and assess effectiveness of these prescriptions on a regular basis.
- Coordinate partnerships with other agencies in order to relay information and share data to foster new and innovative management techniques.
- Prepares annual budget; manages department revenues and expenditures and prepares financial reports; develops and monitors performance measures, statistics, program service evaluations, marketing efforts and other daily administrative functions
- Attends meetings of the BREC Commission, Advisory Committees as well as Professional Conferences as representative of the department.
