Job Summary:
This position will provide administrative support and conceptual direction for Temple's early/elementary teacher preparation program as we pursue a variety of pathways to support diversity among pre-service and in-service educators and administrators. This position is funded by several grants, including from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the William Penn Foundation. Under the leadership of the Program Coordinator of the Early/Elementary teacher education program, the Assistant Director will manage day-to-day activities of the Early/Elementary Education Equity Initiative, including developing new pipelines into teacher education in collaboration with local organizations and stakeholders, as well as supports for practicing teacher to increase retention of diverse professionals in the field. Key responsibilities of the Assistant Director will include (a) outreach to potential high school / dual enrollment partners; (b) coordination with the School District of Philadelphia, surrounding districts, and state- and city-funded preschool initiatives; (c) forging connections with community colleges and other providers; and (d) building relationships with diverse populations of pre- and in-service teachers to better understand their unique strengths and needs. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for (e) working with marketing and communication personnel at the College to promote programming, and with the Program Coordinator and Assistant Dean of College Access and Persistence to identify and pursue funding and scholarship opportunities to support and grow the Educator Diversity programming at the College. Essential tasks will include general oversight of the daily activities of on- and off-campus programming for grant-funded educator diversity initiatives, data collection and management, and supervision of student workers and interns. Generally, in this role, the Assistant Director will coordinate collaborations across units within the College as well as within the university in support of first-generation and traditionally underrepresented students in the early and elementary teaching field.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field and at least four (4) or more years of directly related professional experience working in schools or in the field of education. Must include teaching and/or school counseling experience in early and/or elementary education (birth through grade 4) education. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
Preferred:
  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working in highly diverse early learning settings, with a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges within that dynamic environment
  • Experience working within higher education or an educator diversity initiative, with an understanding of the needs to recruit and retain teachers of color in particular.

Required Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong technology/computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, database maintenance and social media
  • Awareness of and comfort with issues of diversity, specifically around race, class, and gender, as well as an ability to easily engage in and facilitate discussions about diversity
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to move within diverse communities and environments with ease and confidence
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility to take on new responsibilities as they arise, and ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet goals and deadlines both independently and cooperatively
  • Ability to demonstrate passion and commitment to promoting education reform agenda
  • Excellent skills in analyzing and solving problems
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple partners and navigate varying interests
  • Strong interpersonal skills, along with the ability to interact with a diverse group of faculty, administrators and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel to schools/early childhood centers and organizations in Philadelphia for school site visits; some locations may not be accessible by public transportation.
  • Ability to obtain background clearances (PA Child Abuse, FBI , Criminal Background Check, and PA State Police) that would approve one to work with minors.

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.
