Description
Open Sky Wilderness Therapy - Associate Therapist Internship

The Associate Therapist Intern, works with the Family Services department and the Clinical Therapists supporting family therapy intensives, weekend workshops, parent coaching, and other office and field-based activities. Open Sky's Clinical Internship is a beautiful opportunity for graduate students who enjoy working outdoors and have a passion for family therapy. This role supports in the facilitation of rites of passage and ceremony as part of treatment . In addition to supporting our family therapy intensives, interns will collaborate with team therapists in treatment plan development for families. We value collaborative learning. Interns are immersed in our treatment team, experiencing case consultation and periodic training. Interns wrap up each week with a meeting with their internship supervisor.
*We will begin reviewing applications in December 2023 and close this post at the beginning of February 2024. Finalists will be invited to visit our program as early as February.
Schedule
This is a paid, full-time, Monday-Friday position anticipated to work 40 hours per week. Typical schedule would be in the field Monday-Wednesday (3 days/2 nights) followed by meetings, supervision, writing case notes, and phone calls with clients/ therapists on Thursday and Friday
Interns periodically support the student graduation process or weekend family skill-building workshops (Wellness Weekends). Depending on the assignment, the position reports to the Family Services Director or the Clinical Director.
Program Length
This internship runs from June 2024 through May 2025, with potential employment with Open Sky after completing a Master's program.
Essential Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities

  • Support family therapy interventions, parent psycho-education workshops, student graduation experiences, and related services.
  • Perform work as required by the nature of the service delivered (e.g., Family Quests are in the field for three days/week with two overnight stays; Wellness Weekends are Friday night through Sunday afternoon).
  • Help parents and students manage the environment in a wilderness setting. (e.g. keeping families warm and dry, cooking food, tending campfires, etc.)
  • Develop working partnerships with program staff to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Support Clinical Therapists as an assistant, performing duties as assigned.
  • Participate in weekly Family Services department and company meetings to practice case consultation and collaborate with the greater treatment team.
  • Schedule and attend regular supervision meetings with an assigned supervisor. Use supervision and consultation to enhance clinical effectiveness and overall job performance.

Internship Support
  • A small, supportive cohort.
  • Weekly supervision meetings with internship supervisor.
  • Immersion in our treatment team, experiencing case consultation.
  • Periodic training in a variety of therapeutic modalities.
  • Weekly treatment team meeting with experienced clinicians.
  • Practice and feedback, co-facilitating with wilderness therapists.
  • Progressively more complex assignments under the supportive direction.
  • Wilderness training to confidently support our clients.

Compensation
$14.67 - $15.31 per hour
Requirements
Education/Training Required
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Must be enrolled or accepted in an accredited master's degree program (in counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy).

Experience Preferred
  • Wilderness therapy or mental health field experience
  • Supporting treatment process for individuals with mental health issues
  • Working with parents and families engaged in a therapeutic program
  • Leading therapeutic groups
  • Experience in mindfulness, meditation, and yoga practices

Skills, Licenses, Certifications Required
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Presentation skills, computer literacy, and excellent verbal communication and writing skills are required.
  • Have an acceptable driving record and a valid driver's license.
  • Pass pre-employment physical and drug screening, including THC.
  • Pass Colorado, Utah, and FBI background checks.

Physical Demands
Must be able to hear and talk with other people in person and using phone and radio. Must be able to use office technology, including a computer and related equipment. This position sometimes requires strenuous physical activity, including walking on uneven terrain, hiking up to 15 miles per day, carrying a 55+ pound backpack, and hiking at high altitude (above 5000 feet). Employees must be able to perform these activities despite severe temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
Work Environment
Work is performed in office and outdoor settings with frequent interaction with other people. Employee may be exposed to environmental conditions such as extreme weather, noise, and vibration, and employee may be exposed to infectious diseases. Work involves functioning in narrow aisles or passageways. Employee will be working with students who have acute mental, emotional, and behavioral healthcare needs. Employee may drive and ride in Open Sky vehicles in support of program activities.
Additional Requirements
Pass annual physical. Complete DMV Release for annual inquiry and review of driving record. Pass Colorado and Utah background checks. Pass annual Utah background check. Annually review and sign the Utah Provider Code of Conduct.
