Associate Software Engineer - Explosives, Narcotics, and Contraband Detection at a Central PA Tech Startup (Pennsylvania Residents Only)
This is an entry-level, on-site position in Reedsville, Pennsylvania. Candidates should be located within - or be willing to invest in relocating to - this location, which is in the State College, Pennsylvania area, home of the Pennsylvania State University and its world-class research facilities.
This is not a remote work opportunity.

What We Do
Based in the State College, Pennsylvania area, Cignal is a growing tech startup and the creator of the Cignal Engine, an interactive synthetic data environment for developing and testing machine vision algorithms. Cignal Engine combines simulation, AI/ML, and other mathematical techniques to create high-fidelity synthetic image streams that are virtually indistinguishable from real data.
The Cignal Engine is used to test how well transportation security AI/ML models detect firearms, explosives, narcotics, and other dangerous items on people and in baggage and cargo.
What You'll Do
We're seeking a talented Associate Software Engineer - Explosives, Narcotics, and Contraband Detection to help us build the next generation of threat detection systems to protect people and transportation infrastructure. You will personally be helping to make air travel safer while also having a substantial impact on introducing a game-changing, cutting-edge product!
In This Role, You Will:
- Rapidly prototype ideas and concepts related to 3D rendering and simulation
- Work with AI/ML engineers to create interactive intelligent agents and models for screening passengers and personal property
- Develop engine features and fix bugs
- Work closely with the art and asset designers to ensure quality and realism of engine assets
- Participate in code review sessions and accept and respond to critical feedback
- Write efficient, scalable code
What We're Looking For:
- C/C++ development experience (C# okay, but not preferred)
- Linux or UNIX experience
- Strong interest in simulation or gaming technology, 3D modeling, or digital twins
- Strong math skills
- Creativity in problem-solving ability
Nice to Have:
- Experience with other engines, like Unreal Engine or Unity
- Shader development experience
- Blender familiarity
- Familiarity with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras
Pay and Other Considerations
The expected annual base pay for this position in Reedsville, Pennsylvania is USD $75,000/year. Compensation may vary based on factors, including (but not limited to) competencies and skills, knowledge, qualifications, and experience. In addition to base pay, Cignal employees may be eligible to participate our paid holiday and paid time-off programs and benefits plan (subject to terms).
