Job description

The job details are as follows:
What We Do
We build on the strength of our research and development expertise and a distinctive, entrepreneurial culture that encourages diversity, innovation, creativity, sustainability, and, simply, fun. Since inception, our mission has been to find a cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension and other life-threatening diseases. Toward this goal we have successfully gained FDA approval for five medicines, we are always conducting new clinical trials, and we are working to create an unlimited supply of manufactured organs for transplantation.
We are the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation (PBC). Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through (a) the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and (b) technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs. At the same time, we seek to provide our shareholders with superior financial performance and our communities with earth-sensitive energy utilization.
Our company was founded by an entrepreneur whose daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. She sought to find treatment options and a cure for her daughter and patients like her. We are founder-led, and relentless in our pursuit of "medicines for life". We continue to research and develop treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and other orphan diseases.
How you'll contribute
The Associate Scientist, Tissue Systems in the Organ Manufacturing Group (OMG) will contribute to advancing Tissue Engineering strategies to create living 3D printed lung scaffolds in a multidisciplinary team environment. With guidance from the lead scientists, the Associate Scientist will propose, design and lead experiments to improve processes to generate a functional, multicellular lung scaffolds, and also develop analytical methods to assess the functions of cellularized lung scaffolds.
  • Design and execute experiments using adult and iPS-derived lung cells to develop functional lung tissue on 3D printed lung models. The cell and tissue type will vary between endothelial, epithelial, and stromal, depending upon the area of focus for specific teams
  • Develop and implement analytic assays (immunocytochemistry, biochemical assays, cell proliferation assays, gene expression analysis) to evaluate lung endothelial, epithelial, and/or stromal tissue formation and maturation on 3D printed lung models
  • Develop and implement strategies and analytic assays to evaluate media formulations, co-culture techniques, and large-scale culture methods for pulmonary Tissue Engineering
  • Record experimental details and findings in electronic notebook entries, write project reports, and internally present research findings
  • Coordinate with supervisor for project directions, experimental planning, and to review results and progress
  • Contribute to IP, regulatory filings, and journal publications, if necessary
  • Maintain high level of communication with internal cross-functional R&D team, as well as external vendors and consultants
  • Perform other duties as assigned

For this role you will need
Minimum Requirements
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biology (or equivalent)
  • 1+ year(s) prior research experience in developing and testing cell interactions on hydrogels, peptides, microfluidics, biomaterials, bioreactors and/or biomaterials. Relevant experiences during graduate school will be considered.
  • Track record of success (products, patents, grants, fellowships and/or publications) in a field related to pulmonary biology, iPSC-derived epithelial / endodermal lineages, Tissue Engineering, and/or culturing cells in novel contexts.
  • Strong technical experience including imaging techniques (e.g. basic microscopy, confocal imaging, image analysis) and biological analytical assays (e.g. immunocytochemistry, gene expression analysis, ELISAs, flow cytometry, viability assays, etc)
  • Minimum one first-author publication in a related or comparable field.
  • High organizational skills, strong communication skills, adaptability, and independent trouble-shooting capabilities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-doctoral or industry experience
  • Experience with iPSC-derived lineages, pulmonary biology, and/or epithelial lineages
  • Experience in the field of lung development and/or regeneration.
  • In-depth knowledge of alveolar or airway epithelial cells and biology.
  • Experience with the operation of bioreactors, microfluidics, scaffolds, and/or other dynamic or large-scale culture systems.
  • Experience with cell-cell interactions, ECM production, or co-culture techniques
