Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
As the University's Chief Academic Officer, the Provost has broad responsibilities for advancing the education and research missions of the University. The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost ( OEVCP) provides the leadership for UNC-CH's strategic planning for academic programs. The Provost's organization ensures the development and enhancement of high quality baccalaureate, masters and doctoral-level programs through ongoing program review and assessment, the raising of academic standards, and the expansion of research and other scholarship/creative activity.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Associate Provost for Finance is a senior financial leadership role within the Office of the Provost responsible for overseeing the financial and budgetary operations. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring prudent financial management and supporting the goals and priorities of the Provost. The Associate Provost for Finance is responsible for managing financial operations and financial planning functions for the Provost units. Budgetary management responsibilities include monthly reporting and analysis, quarterly and long-range forecasting as well as oversight for the annual budget planning exercise for operating units and a host of Provost-level programs and initiatives. Financial management responsibilities include budget support (annual and five-year plans), quarterly forecasting, financial/trend analysis, data mining and monthly financial reporting. 
In addition, the position is responsible for overseeing the administration of the fiscal operations functions including an accounting shared services team for procurement, accounting and reporting functions, travel and expense management and payroll/personnel administration. The person in this role will also provide oversight of the general accounting, purchasing, contract review, vendor payment processing, expense reimbursement and financial policy training, interpretation and enforcement functions within business operations. 
This position maintains a key role in the annual budget process, including consultation with unit leaders within the Provost unit in preparation of the budget, review of the budget submission for substantive and mechanical accuracy. 
This position plays a key role in ensuring the effective allocation of resources to support the Provost unit academic and administrative operations. The Associate Provost reports to the Vice Provost for Strategy and Resource Management.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field. A master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CFA, CPA) is preferred.
Eight or more years of experience in financial analysis, budgeting, and financial management, preferably within higher education or non-profit organizations.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in financial modeling and data analysis.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting and presenting financial information to various stakeholders.
Experience working with financial software, spreadsheets, and other financial tools.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams) Applications.
Ability to work collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders.
Knowledge of financial regulations, accounting standards, and budgeting processes.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with Tableau, SAS or other visual analytics software.
Experience with PeopleSoft or an equivalent system.
Knowledge of UNC-CH or UNC system financial policies, procedures, and regulations.
Understanding of the different fund types at UNC-CH and the limitations and opportunities associated with each.
Experience managing the budget operations of a higher education institution of similar scope and complexity as UNC-CH or in a financial leadership role of a medium sized institution with an overall comparable scope of responsibility.
Experience leading and managing a team.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
The job is primarily office-based and requires sitting for extended periods while working on a computer or conducting meetings. The ability to read and analyze financial data, as well as operate a computer and other office equipment. The role may involve handling tight deadlines, complex financial issues, and occasional high-pressure situations. Effective stress management and the ability to stay composed are valuable.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
