Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: Under direction of the Trauma Medical Director or his designee, oversees certain aspects of the Trauma Program including but not limited to; medical direction, education, performance, quality improvement, pre-hospital, and Trauma Registry activities. These responsibilities, in coordination with the Trauma Program Medical Director shall be managed consistent with Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation standards and with those policies promulgated by Lancaster General Hospital and the Department of Surgery. In conjunction with the Trauma Medical Director, and Administrative Director participates in strategic planning for the Trauma Program. Consults with the Trauma Program Medical Director (TPMD), as appropriate, in carrying out duties and responsibilities including setting of priorities and timelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
  • Patient Care, Policies, Procedures, and Admission Criteria: Facilitates, in conduction with the TPMD the development of patient care and admission criteria policies and procedures for the Lancaster General Hospital Trauma Program securing necessary approval of these policies and procedures. Implements and insures compliance with all approved policies and procedures. Coordinates the development of protocols and management guidelines necessary for the care of the trauma patient.
    • Patient Care Management: In conjunction with the TPMD oversees the medical and surgical care of trauma patients and intervenes on active cases where there are variances from the standard of care. This responsibility includes intervening on cases that may not be managed according to the designated standard. This includes using the appropriate algorithm for reporting lack of action by the attending physician in such matters, up to and including the President of the Medical Staff. Exercises the authority to transfer the patient to another healthcare institution if this is deemed necessary to maintain the designated standard of patient care. Surgical assistant to the TPMD for elective trauma cases. Responsible, in conjunction with the TPMD, and Trauma Program Coordinator, for the clinical practice of the nursing and support staff employed in the Trauma Program.
    • Performance Improvement Activities: In conjunction with the TPMD directs and maintains responsibility for trauma related Quality and Performance Improvement activities such as;
      • Evaluates weekly patient care and outcome data to provide direction and oversight at weekly trauma surgeon performance improvement meetings.
      • Reviews monthly patient care and outcome data relative to mortality and morbidity and carries necessary research and investigation to provide oversight and direction at Mortality and Morbidity (M & M) conference.
      • Monitors and provides direction to Trauma Care Management.
      • Reviews and evaluates Trauma Registry data on a monthly basis to identify trends for further evaluation and follow-up.
      • Utilizes reviewed data and meeting results to provide recommendations relative to Outreach initiatives.
    • Monitor the clinical and behavioral performance of all individuals who are credentialed within the Trauma Program.
    • Continuing Medical Education: Networks with other trauma physician leaders and participates in nationally recognized trauma forums and professional committees, which would enhance skills and abilities as an associate trauma Medical Director. Facilitates the educational needs of the Family and Community Residency Program as it relates to the Trauma Program. In conjunction with the TPMD, reviews and monitors the compliance of the participating surgeons and other specialists in pursuing continuing medical education and maintain competency in the medical management of trauma patients. Participates in trauma related educational programs (internal and external) for Health Professionals and the community. Oversees continuing educational activities such as ATLS.
    • Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations: Assists the TPMD in insuring that the Trauma Program conforms to the bylaws, rules, and regulations of the Lancaster General Hospital Medical Staff. Helps facilitate compliance with all Local, State, Regional, and National regulations related to trauma care.
    • Physician Coverage: Provides coverage in the absence of the TPMD as defined by a mutually agreed upon schedule by the TPMD and the Associate Medical Director. Participates as a member in the Lancaster General Hospital Trauma Service on-call roster.
    • Medical Staff Liaison: In conjunction with the TPMD acts as formal liaison between the Trauma Medical Staff and Lancaster General Hospital Administrative Staff.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:
  • Administrative Policies and Procedures: In conjunction with the TPMD assists in development of policies and procedures related to the Trauma Program.
  • Planning and Program Development: In conjunction with the TPMD and the Administrative Director of Emergency and Trauma Services, identifies and recommends objectives for the Trauma Program consistent with Lancaster General Hospital goals. Participates in development and marketing of the Trauma Program.
  • Staff In-Service Education: In conjunction with the TPMD and the Trauma Program Coordinator, insures that an effective program of in-service education is implemented for nursing and support personnel in the Trauma Program.
  • Represents: the Lancaster General Hospital Trauma Program at National, State, and Regional professional meetings, attendance at the Section of Accredited Trauma Centers at HAP. Serves as: TPMD delegate as needed for; Medical Executive Committee, Trauma Oversight Board, Process Improvement Committee, Trauma Quality Management Chair, Trauma Morbid & Mortality Chair, and Trauma Care Management Chair.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • M.D., or DO Fellowship trained in Trauma.
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Board Certification in medical specialties of general surgery and surgical critical care within two (2) years of assuming position
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor certification within two (2) years of assuming position
  • Documented interest and experience in trauma education and research.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to allow effective communications with a wide variety of hospital personnel and physicians and the general public.
  • Significant hospital-based surgery experience.
  • A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program.
