Crawford Industries, now a part of Spartech, LLC has an opening for an Associate Manufacturing Process Engineer on our team in Crawfordsville, IN. The Crawfordsville operation of the organization specializes in extruding and converting flat plastic sheet. Plastic sheet may have graphics added and then die cut into license plates, the “lamp shade” used in veterinary clinics, signage, file folders, 3-ring binders, covers for school date books, for example. We reuse our scrap plastic whenever possible to create our environmentally friendly products. Job Summary
Reporting to the Plant Manager, this role is responsible for monitoring the quality of production on an ongoing basis & maintaining documentation of work performed. The role will drive process improvement, lead the customer complaint process including root cause analysis and troubleshooting, and drive continuous improvement through the collection and analysis of data to enhance material/labor utilization output rates, set up times, and product quality. This position will coordinate both long- and short-term project identification and execution to achieve a facility’s goals and objectives.
Essential Job Duties
- Collaborates routinely with Production Supervisors and Managers, Customer Service and Sales to establish product quality requirements, related processing parameters and inspection programs. Also works to resolve current quality problems throughout the company.
- Leads customer complaint process via root cause analysis, documentation, trials, and confirmation of effectiveness. Engage with customers and commercial representatives to enhance customer satisfaction. Clarifies all quality related DPI’s, Credits or Returns and assures proper reporting, investigation and documentation.
- Inspects the product quality at work centers detecting defects that result in substandard quality and possible escape to customer(s). Conducts inspections: in-process, in-coming, final inspection, and dock audits on required frequency.
- Leads all aspects of onsite customer audits and participates in any necessary supplier/vendor audits. Document needed improvements and action plans for management team review.
- Leads the quality assurance efforts on all Customer samples, trials, qualifications and proofs internally and ensures acceptable quality of all jobs sub-contracted to external vendors.
- Performs accurate mechanical, physical, and visual inspections of raw materials, components, sub-assemblies and in-process products using tools, specifications and quality information provided by Process Engineering. Documents quality of examined products onto necessary reporting forms and differentiates between acceptable, marginal (minor) defects, critical (major) defects, or rejectable quality in his/her area of responsibility.
- Optimize process performance with Operational Excellence and LEAN tools and techniques. Drive process improvement, root cause analysis and troubleshooting through the collection and analysis of data to enhance material/labor utilization output rates, set up times, and product quality. Define and achieve goals, objectives, and projects related to yield improvement, labor optimization, conversion cost reduction and product quality.
- Lead projects using standard project management tools and procedures. Ensure compliance to all ISO/IMS and Operational Excellence policies and procedures.
- Assists in training Associates in established Manufacturing methods, rates, and processes to maintain acceptable quality standards.
- Manages and keeps current the Quality Management system (IMS) documentation including Procedures and Work Instructions on new programs resulting from root cause & corrective action activities. Maintains the Quality Manual by preparing updates and communicating within the business appropriately.
- Ensures the proper distribution of any specific Quality parameters, Change Notices, etc. and makes the necessary changes to the shop floor packet, the computer system and other pertinent documents.
Requirements
Education & Experience
- Familiar with Microsoft Office and associated software, specifically Excel.
- Knowledge of calipers & micrometers or other measurements tools.
- Previous experience performing Quality Audits / Inspections preferred.
- Good understanding of problem-solving techniques, root cause analysis and PDCA investigation using 5Why and/or A3 methodologies.
- User of Six Sigma, SPC and Lean Continuous Improvement preferred.
- Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be flexible and be able to work 12 hours when necessary.
Preferred, but not required aspects:
- Preferred: BS Degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences or equivalent. Significant practical experience with plastics processing equipment will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Preferred: Two to seven years operations or engineering experience, with 3 years preferred experience in plastics related Industry.
- Preferred: Operational Excellence training, and/or certifications (Lean, Six Sigma, ISO), strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Outstanding leadership characteristics and drive for data driven results.
- Analytical and mathematical skills necessary to collect, interpret, and act on process trials and activities.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as EHS standards, operating manuals, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as business periodicals, journals, and government regulations.
- Ability to write operational and project reports, correspondence, and policies and procedures.
- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels in the organization including internal and external associates (including project presentations in group settings). Including the ability to train people.
- Ability to meet physical demands associated with position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook). SAP ERP experience preferred.
