Job Posting Summary
The Associate Head Athletics Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Athletics Coach with the management and administration of all activities related to his/her sport and exercises direct supervision of recruiting, training, and coaching student-athletes participating in the sport. The Associate Head Athletics Coach is fully responsible for compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations as well as Conference rules and University policies governing intercollegiate athletics.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Enables the achievement of a quality, competitive sports program and supports the educational goals of individual student-athletes by demonstrating a coaching philosophy which encourages those goals and promotes an environment conducive to both.
  • Assists the Head Athletics Coach with the management and administration of all activities related to his/her sport and exercises direct supervision of recruiting, training, and coaching student-athletes participating in the sport.
  • Protects the integrity of the sport coached and the reputation of the intercollegiate athletics program of the University by ensuring that recruiting activities, student-athlete eligibility determination, scholarships and financial aid programs, scheduled practice sessions, and related activities governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) are following NCAA rules and regulations as well as applicable conference rules and University policies.
  • Reduces the likelihood of athletic-related injuries or the aggravation of such injuries during practice sessions and scheduled contests by being knowledgeable of the injuries sustained in the sport and proper prevention methods, directing appropriate pre-training session and pre-contest preparations and warmups, and arranging for qualified sports medicine personnel or athletic trainers to be available during all training sessions and contests.
  • Assists the Head Coach in developing a competent and effective coaching staff by recruiting and hiring qualified applicants, providing guidance on departmental or University policies and coaching philosophy, encouraging professional development through participation in coaching decisions and recruiting activities, making coaching assignments based upon qualifications, supervising coaching activities, and evaluating performances.
  • Supports established athletic fund-raising goals by actively participating in fund-raising events and promotional activities for intercollegiate athletics and represents the Head Athletics Coach at selected events when schedules conflict.
  • Promotes a positive image of the intercollegiate athletics program and the University by establishing and enforcing standards of personal behavior, conduct, and appearance for the coaching staff, athletes, and support personnel on and off the University campus, participating in community and professional organizations, representing the University at professional meetings and on community committees, establishing and maintaining credible relations with various news media.
  • Participates as a member of the University community by teaching appropriate courses or class sessions in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, as required.
  • Assists the Head Coach in the management of funds by providing input for development of the annual Athletics Department budget.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Maintains competency and professional currency through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Director of Athletics.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the University's intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including representing the Head Athletics Coach in meetings and events.

Supervision
  • The Associate Head Athletics Coach is supervised by the Head Athletics Coach, however, exercises considerable independent judgment in the management and coaching of his/her sport. The Associate Head Coach may be assigned direct supervision of the other members of the coaching staff, graduate assistants, and students involved in the sport.

Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience:
  • Excellent Communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental skills of lacrosse.
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree required
Physical/Other Requirements:
  • Must be able to push, pull, move or lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to meet all general health requirements for the position as per university policies
Compensation is commensurate with job responsibilities and scope of duties as defined by the Head Coach, and the schedule availability of the incumbent.
Mercy University promotes a community campus environment.
