The OpportunityAssociate General Counsel, Legal Director of Risk Management
The Associate General Counsel (AGC), Legal Director of Risk Management serves as principal counsel to UCHealth's Risk Management program to identify potential areas of legal risk and exposure to related legal claims and effectively mitigate or eliminate such risk. The AGC, Legal Director of Risk Management will work closely with the patient safety and regulatory teams to coordinate Risk Management practices across the UCHealth system.
Reporting RelationshipsReports to: Chief Legal Officer, UCHealth
Responsibilities
Direct and manage all legal aspects of UCHealth's Risk Management function
Ensure early and appropriate consultation with medical professionals, hospital administration, and risk managers upon the occurrence of an incident anywhere in the UCHealth system in cooperation with the Director of Risk Management
Create standard legal protocols for handling adverse events
Act as point person for the legal department for subpoenas and other legal correspondence, including litigation holds, open records requests, and regulatory notices
Conduct and oversee internal investigations as needed
Coordinate with regulatory team to manage reportable events
Regularly monitor and make recommendations for improvements in patient care and safety
Participate in settlement negotiations, mediations, and CANDOR meetings on behalf of UCHealth
Ensure timely and appropriate communication with hospital and system leadership
Review existing event reporting systems and provide recommendations as necessary to improve such systems
Participate in legal leadership and various patient safety and quality meetings
Supervise and train risk managers
Establish training programs for medical professionals, hospital personnel, and administrators in preventing adverse outcomes and managing risk
Monitor developments in and lessons learned from malpractice litigation and update hospital and system leadership
Candidate QualificationsThe successful candidate will meet the following requirements:
Skills and Experience
J.D. Degree required. Minimum 12 years experience as a practicing attorney with expertise in health law or related specialty such as medical malpractice
Excellent communication, writing, and conflict management skills
Demonstrated ability to independently handle sensitive and complex legal matters
Ability to work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams to effectively drive outcomes
Risk management experience preferred

The pay range for this position is: $84.28 - $134.84 / hour. Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
