Job description

SUMMARY

Actors' Equity is a national labor union of professional actors and stage managers working in live theatre, founded for the purpose of negotiating strong agreements that protect the wages, hours and working conditions of its members, enforcing those agreements, organizing new work opportunities for members and pursuing appropriate legislation on matters affecting their profession. We represent the belief that the art of theatre is an essential cultural and economic component of our society. We are hiring an Associate Director of Public Policy. This position will help to build political power and support the union’s Public Policy priorities. The Associate Director will oversee the union’s release staff, who work closely with coordinated campaign teams to mobilize union members for voting in the upcoming election. Off cycle, this position will help build and maintain relationships in priority states to support the union’s Public Policy campaigns. This is a full-time role that demands the ability to handle various projects simultaneously. The position is currently hybrid; work hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., though working weekends and evenings might be necessary, with the ability to flex your schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and execute voter contact programs for union members, including canvassing, phone banking and text messaging programs.
  • Build strong relationships with union and campaign leaders; represent the union in various coalition meetings.
  • Recruit, train and supervise release staff.
  • Maintain and update a unified 2024 calendar of political activities.
  • Ensure release staff meet weekly campaign voter contact goals as assigned.
  • Coordinate with staff who are deployed in the field to file regular reports on voter contact to leadership.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism at all times.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Prior experience with political organizing tools such as the Voter Access Network (VAN) and Hustle is a plus.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to move individuals and groups of workers to action around shared goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Motivated self-starter who takes initiative and is also a team player.
  • Strong personal planning, organizational and time management skills, including ability to discern priorities when faced with many important tasks.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Computer skills (in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Previous experience in labor, political or community organizing a plus.
  • Prior experience cutting turf and building call/walk lists and staging GOTV events preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and union values.
  • Driver’s license a plus.
  • Experience in or passion for theatre a plus.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • Work in a hybrid home/office environment sitting at a desk, table, or computer workstation for extended periods of time.
  • May occasionally require long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • May travel for work assignments.

Compensation:

  • Starting salary for this position is $82,000.
