Associate Director of Intramural Sports

Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

Athletics and Physical Education offers a diverse program of physical and outdoor education, recreational services, Intramural Sports and intercollegiate athletic competition, plus Wellness programs for faculty and staff and fitness centers for the entire Cornell community.


Serves as an integral part within Athletics and Physical Education, the Associate Director of Intramural Sports manages one of the largest Intramural Sports programs in the nation. The role is responsible for all organization, administration, and supervision of Cornell's vast Intramural Sports program (30+ activities, 150 student employees, 5,000 participants). The position provides supervision on personnel (student employees and one intern) and contest management including officials’ training clinics and risk management. In addition, the position is responsible for budgeting, promotions and marketing, public relations, and rules and policy development.


This position is full-time, 10 months per year.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Leisure Studies or related field with a minimum of 1-2 years of professional experience within a college recreation setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ARC First Aid and CPR certification. CPR First Aid Instructor required within six months of hire.
  • Experience in officiating sports including training student officials for Intramural Sports programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, When to Work, IM Leagues and website management including making sure information online is up-to-date and making changes when necessary.
  • Excellent organizational skills in order to prioritize and manage multiple tasks occurring at the same time.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Nights and weekends required.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Experience with When to Work or other staff scheduling software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Fitness Management or related field with a strong emphasis in campus recreation.
  • Experience with recreation facility supervision
  • Experience with RecTrac and/or Fusion.
  • Experience with student staff professional development.
