Job description

The Associate Director, Individual Giving is responsible for growing philanthropic support from individuals who are inspired by Oakland Museum of California’s mission. This position works closely with the CEO and the Senior Director of Philanthropy to cultivate, solicit, and steward both unrestricted and programmatic gifts to the Museum. This position manages strategy and implementation for OMCA’s Donor Forum program, the Museum’s higher level donor membership group, a portfolio of 125-175 households. This position plays a leadership role in executing the Museum’s annual fundraising event, including securing sponsorships for the event. This individual also has oversight of the planned giving program. As a supervisor, the Associate Director of Individual Giving manages two direct reports, the Development Events Manager and the Individual Giving Coordinator. This person will work collaboratively across the Museum, partnering with staff to identify fundraising opportunities and to instill a culture of philanthropy across OMCA.  


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Museum’s mission to inspire understanding and empathy with stories and experiences of California’s art, history, and natural environment to build more equitable and connected communities.
  • Contribute to and support the OMCA strategic plan, annual priorities, and institutional initiatives, including OMCA’s commitment to anti-racism.
  • Contribute to a positive organizational culture based on mutual respect, a spirit of collegiality, cooperation, and openness to many perspectives.
  • Participate in a culture of ongoing learning, upholding the organizational values of equity, courage, collaboration, belonging, and inspiration.

 

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cultivate, develop, and maintain relationships with individual donors, and solicit their donations to OMCA.
  • Provide strategic oversight to the Donor Forum program (donors of $1,500 and above), specifically considering how to leverage it as a major gifts pipeline. 
  • Partner across the organization to develop opportunities for individual philanthropic support and to engage colleagues in the work of fundraising.
  • Secure sponsorships for the annual fundraising event, and help to lead the conception and execution of the event.
  • Manage the Planned Giving program, including marketing of opportunities and growing the number of planned giving donors to the Museum.
  • Supervise through coaching and facilitation, the Development Events Manager, who is responsible for all events in the department, including donor cultivation events, and most notably, the annual fundraising event, currently called Gathering in the Garden.
  • Supervise through coaching and facilitation, the Individual Giving Coordinator, who is responsible for supporting the Donor Forum program and other duties as assigned.
  • Develop and manage annual expense and revenue budget for Individual Giving.
  • Partner across the Development team, in providing exceptional cultivation and stewardship for OMCA donors.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the work of evolving OMCA’s Individual Giving fundraising practices to align with the Museum’s evolution to become a more anti-racist museum.

EXPERIENCE

  • 4+ years of related fundraising experience.
  • Experience personally cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts of 5-figures or more from individual donors. 
  • Ability to deliver results, facilitate dialogue, and problem-solve beyond temporary solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to evolving fundraising practices through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  • Experience managing and developing staff.
  • Knowledge of planned giving policies and best practices.
  • English language proficiency in both spoken and written form.
  • Relational database experience required, Raiser's Edge preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

COMPENSATION: $103,900 - $103,900 annually
