What You Will Do:


Under the general direction of the Director of Access and Campus Resources, this position provides direction, oversight and implementation for functions and activities related to basic needs services including but not limited to: Food assistance, financial assistance, housing, transportation, healthcare, childcare, dependent care, and technology. The position is also responsible for developing and overseeing local partnerships with feeder high schools, community organizations, and businesses in meeting student basic needs.


Essential Responsibilities:
  • Leadership and Supervision: Serve as campus leader for the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategies and programs aimed at addressing the basic needs of students and promoting active civic involvement. Develop program priorities including short- and long-term programmatic goals and objectives in alignment with NLU's strategic direction. Manage day-to-day operations of the food pantry and Thrive resources in Chicago and Wheeling, ensuring effective delivery of services and alignment with best practices. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise staff including FT Americorps Vista, PT administrative assistant, student workers, and interns.
  • Outreach and Partnerships: Establish campus, local, regional collaborative relationships and partnerships with on-campus departments, business entities, community organizations, and local educational agencies pertaining to student's basic needs; partner with food bank affiliates and other non-profit entities to secure resources for students.
  • Programming: Plan, develop, implement, and assess a robust slate of educational and social programs related to raising awareness and learning about student basic needs. Organize Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week programming annually.
  • Fundraising and Grants: Collaborate with campus and community partners to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to secure necessary funding for the support of basic needs programs including identifying potential funding and food sources, preparing compelling grant proposals, and effectively stewarding resources from donors and funding organizations.
  • Communications: Develop and implement communication and marketing strategies to promote awareness of programs, engage stakeholders, and attract necessary support and resources. Develop and execute communication processes to ensure timely responses (1-2 business days) to student requests.
  • Data Analysis, Impact, & Reporting: Leads data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts. Gathers, analyzes, prepares, and summarizes basic needs program data to prepare reports and/or analyses for program constituents as well as the broader community of stakeholders on and off campus.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Social Work, Education, Public Administration, Counseling or a related field.
  • Fundraising and grants management experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of issues related to food security, housing, healthcare access, and financial assistance, particularly in the context of higher education.
  • 1-3 years of experience supervising people including staff, student workers or interns
  • 2-3 years of experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows genuine sensitivity to the needs, feelings and capabilities of other people. Deals with others in a pleasant manner. Treats others with respect and consideration.
  • Project Management: Manages each stage of a project to ensure that commitments are met in a manner that is timely and within budget. Clearly defines roles and responsibilities, determines necessary resources, and monitors project performance through appropriate systems and procedures.
  • Solving Problems: Takes a proactive approach to anticipating and preventing problems. When problems occur, defines those problems, investigates obstacles, gathers relevant information, decides whether solving the problem should be a group decision, generates and analyzes alternate solutions and arrives at a workable solution.
