Position Summary: The School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast invites applications for an Associate Dean position in Juneau. UAS School of Arts & Sciences programs take full advantage of the majesty of beautiful Southeast Alaska, which includes the famed Inside Passage-a majestic array of islands, channels, and fjords abutting coastal mountains, icefields, and glaciers. Our students have opportunities for field study and research in the Tongass National Forest, in intertidal marine environments, and on nearby icefields. Our Juneau Campus is located in Alaska's capital city, which provides opportunities for student internships in Alaska's legislature. The Associate Dean will help to foster an environment where diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are vital to present and future success. This position is a 12-month contract, is expected to begin in the winter 2024, and is an on-site position located in beautiful Juneau, Alaska.

Duties:

20 The Associate Dean will be responsible for Implementing and maintaining a new Faculty Mentorship Initiative. The Associate Dean will also work with the Dean, Department Chair and Mentors on Faculty Development during the Evaluation/Tenure & Promotion process. Essential
30 The Associate Dean will work closely with Dual Enrollment personnel in the Provost's office to ensure a seamless process for all UAS students and our high school partners. The Associate Dean will collaborate with our administrative staff and faculty on regularly updating course fees (also related to travel opportunities with students). This position will also collaborate with Campus Directors, Department Chairs, and admissions personnel on course sequencing and enrollment management strategies. 50 The Associate Dean will carry out specified administrative functions in collaboration with the Dean, working closely with the Executive Assistant to the Dean and the Administrative Officer. The Associate Dean will be expected to attend department chair meetings, oversee scheduling, course sequencing, preferred course offerings, sign course change forms, degree audits, and other registration forms. The Associate Dean will work with faculty and Chairs on various programmatic needs and issues, and sign routine paperwork as delegated by the Dean. The Associate Dean will identify and manage necessary academic policies and strategies, and oversee their implementation in the School, and direct accreditation compliance initiatives and reporting, in collaboration with the Department Chairs. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Work with the dean to develop, coordinate, and implement a student recruitment and retention plan to increase undergraduate and graduate student enrollment within A&S.
  • Identify, develop and manage necessary academic policies and strategies, and oversee their implementation in the School, including compliance with University regulations and requirements; identify and communicate academic issues and discrepancies to the dean and department chairs and recommend resolutions.
  • Oversee the expansion and coordination of course and academic undergraduate and graduate program delivery, in collaboration with the department chairs and faculty.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data on undergraduate and graduate recruitment, admissions, enrollments, retention, academic progress, student diversity, advising loads, and course evaluations.
  • Direct accreditation compliance initiatives and reporting, in collaboration with the department chairs.
  • Identify support mechanisms, in collaboration with the dean and department chairs, to facilitate and evaluate faculty growth and development, particularly new faculty development, with respect to academic expectations, faculty mentoring, innovative instructional methods and use of technology, experiential education, and continuing and professional education.
  • Assist faculty with academic workloads, annual activities and evaluations for the dean's final approval.
  • Serve as the dean-level signatory for undergraduate and graduate academic paperwork.
  • Signature authority for the dean in the dean's absence.

Required Education or Training:
Terminal degree in the faculty members chosen field.
Demonstrated leadership ability and interest in academic affairs.
Fully tenured at the rank of Associate Professor or higher.
Preferred Qualifications:
Fully tenured at the rank of Full Professor.

Salary Information:

This is a 12 month, full-time, exempt, non-represented faculty position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.

The largest of the schools at UAS, the School of Arts and Sciences is comprised of four departments: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Business and Public Administration that offer a wide variety of programs and all of the General Education Requirements (GERs). Learning and research take place not only in classrooms or online, but also in the rainforest, ice field, wetlands, and marine environment of Southeast Alaska. Small classes with top notch faculty let students build relationships while pursuing educational goals. Internship and practicum opportunities with the Alaska State Legislature; Perseverance Theatre; Sealaska Heritage Institute; Goldbelt Heritage Foundation, Research, Experiential & Creative Activities (URECA) program; and other organizations allow students to gain experience, knowledge, and skill.

The Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences will be an individual with an ability and desire to work with colleagues from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds while also encouraging the growth and development of diversity at UAS as a whole.

The Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences is a vital member of the deans leadership team on the Juneau campus, and holds an exempt administrative appointment in a 12-month contract. The Associate Dean regularly communicates and collaborates with department chairs, program coordinators, faculty, staff, and students, and is focused on the internal health of the School of Arts and Sciences. The Associate Dean provides leadership and oversight for undergraduate and graduate programs that support faculty in their various academic roles within A&S. This position is responsible for oversight of curriculum development and management, educational quality assessment and improvement, academic support for the faculty, and facilitation of an inclusive learning environment for a diverse student body.
