The primary objective of the Associate Dean for Clinical Programs (at HPH) is to assist the Dean in (a) supporting and coordinating the academic and clinical activities of Faculty Providers at Hawaii Pacific Health (HPH) and serve as a key liaison between the University and HPH to further the academic and clinical missions and goals of the University and HPH, (b) providing key input into the financial and strategic elements associated with the recruitment, hiring and employment of Faculty Providers, and (c) advancing research and academics at HPH. The Associate Dean will also serve as the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) for the HPH Medical Group (HPHMG) and serve in a similar capacity for the HPHMG in support of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HPHMG.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Dean, serve as Associate Dean for Clinical Programs (at HPH) on behalf of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) to ensure compliance with all accrediting body, state, federal, hospital, and university rules and regulations. Ensure the mission, vision, and goals of JABSOM are met to continually maintain the highest quality medical care, teaching, and research efforts in the clinical learning environment.

  1. On behalf of the University, the Associate Dean will provide guidance and direction for faculty development and develop program strategy for the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs based at HPH.
  2. Assist the Dean in the overall day-to-day administration of all JABSOM academic programs interfacing with the HPH clinical learning environment, to include working on Dean's behalf to support relevant clinical planning, policy development, and program supervision. Help develop and implement policies and procedures for the JABSOM relevant to the HPH clinical learning environment.
  3. Develop and implement academic strategies for JABSOM academic UME/GME and research programs within the HPH health system, which includes conducting these academic programs within a culture of safety and provider resiliency framework.
  4. Coordinate cross-department JABSOM UME programs and research related to learning environments within the HPH health system.
  5. In coordination with clinical department leadership and the Office of the Designated Institutional Official (ODIO) (for GME matters) and the Office of Medical Education for UME matters, support JABSOM academic program accreditation efforts and faculty development within the HPH health system.
  6. Advocate for academic resources to align and advance the JABSOM academic and HPH clinical missions within the HPH health system.
  7. Represent JABSOM leadership during academic faculty recruitments based within the HPH health system.
  8. Assist and guide JABSOM academic department chairs and division chiefs during HPH strategic, operational, and fiscal planning.
  9. Assist in resolving administrative issues, building long-term strategic plans, building a reliable infrastructure for the academic faculty practice within HPH/HPH Medical Group (HPHMG), delivering strong GME and UME programs, and assisting with the recruitment, retention, and development of the clinical faculty.
  10. Assist the ODIO and HPHMG leadership to facilitate the implementation of an overall GME plan, integrating education and clinical objectives.
  11. Serve on the JABSOM Dean's executive leadership team.
  12. All other duties as assigned by the Dean.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school and completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency program.
  • Must meet educational requirements for Hawaii state licensure
  • 5 years of experience working in an accredited medical school dean's office administration or other senior leadership roles (e.g., department chair or vice-chair). Such experience shall include academic planning and management; coordinating medical school and clinical operations, faculty development and retention, promotion and tenure matters.
  • Five (5) years of broad experience in all multiple aspects of clinical affairs for an accredited medical school, university, medical center, or health care institution.
Special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  1. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medical education and clinical affairs in an accredited medical school.
  2. Knowledge of the practices and policies involved in the administration of a medical school.
  3. Knowledge of and experience with hospital/healthcare organizations and legislative structures, developing productive relationships in complex environments, and constructively managing political forces.
  4. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with multiple constituencies, including medical resources in the community, state, nationally, or internationally.
  5. Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with internal and external constituencies, both orally and in writing.
  6. Demonstrated planning, organizational, and management skills.
  7. Ability to enhance the financial resources of the School and to represent the School and its mission in a variety of settings.
  8. Familiarity with operations and structures of hospitals, health care institutions, and group practices.
  9. Knowledge of the Joint Commission and applicable federal and state regulations.
  10. Knowledge of governmental regulations and laws.
  11. Knowledge of health care industry including issues and trends.
  12. Knowledge of legal issues in field of expertise
  13. Strong organization and planning skills.
  14. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • In addition to an MD or DO degree, possesses an advanced degree likely to advance leadership skills - e.g., an MBA (or equivalent advanced business degree), MPH, MHA, JD, MEd (or equivalent advanced medical education degree), MS, or PhD.
  • Broad experience working in all aspects of clinical affairs for an accredited medical school, university, medical center, or other health care institution.
