Job Summary:This is a one year contract position with an appointment end date of 8/31/25. **
Under the supervision of UCSF and other UC Legal attorneys, the Associate Counsel will conduct legal research, draft documents, attend client meetings, hearings, and negotiations, as appropriate and possible, and participate in other activities intended to expose the Associate Counsel to the practice of law and substance of the Office of Legal.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate And the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a related area within the last 3 years; and/or related experience/training
- Must possess a J.D. from an accredited law school
- Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar (Out-of-state hire would be afforded time to pass the Bar within a reasonable period)
- Ability to gain skills in collaboration and creative thinking to effectively partner with other attorneys and a diverse spectrum of clients
- Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, including strong ability to actively listen to understand and differentiate critical aspects of issue, prior to offering counsel
- Demonstrated written communication skills and ability to create and deliver effective materials and / or presentations appropriate to a particular audience
- Ability to acquire skills to draft accurate and complete legal documents, such as pleadings, legal responses, affidavits, position statements and briefs
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact when handling sensitive or potentially sensitive issues
- Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a legal support or intern role
- Basic understanding of legal issues in a University counsel setting
- Basic understanding of legal issues in a university counsel or in-house hospital or health system setting
License/Certification:
Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar (Out-of-state hire would be afforded time to pass the Bar within a reasonable period)
