And, for the last 10 years, the Hamilton College Maurice Horowitch Career Center has been a strategic player in that objective, developing innovative new strategies to engage students in Career Development. The Career Center is among the first, and still remains, the leader to leverage student-to-student outreach, provide students with individualized and consistent career coaching through a dedicated career advising model, and was among the first and still is, one of only a handful of institutions to have a NYC employer development team. The Hamilton Career Center is a leader in virtually every metric.
The Assistant or Associate, Career Development is a critical member of an energetic and collaborative team responsible for providing a broad range of services and programs including individualized career exploration, professional skill building, industry-related career advising, educational workshops and presentations, implementation of communication strategies, and signature Career Center events.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Maurice Horowitch Career Center, the Assistant or Associate, Career Development will provide Career Development advice, as well as internship and job advising, to students through individual appointments, group workshops and online engagement. The Assistant or Associate, Career Development will work one-on-one to assist their assigned cohort of students in their personal Career Development process over their 4 years at Hamilton. The Advisor will also be a part of an engaged and motivated career advising team responsible for the ongoing structure and content of the Career Center’s developmental curriculum.
This individual will bring a proven understanding of career advising and student development theories, and demonstrated program planning, organization, and execution skills, as well as an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and problem-solve within a fast-paced office environment.
This is an exempt position with a pay range of $58,459 - $60,000.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary career advisor to an assigned cohort of students
- Help students assess their skills, interests, and values; work with students to obtain occupational information and explore career interests
- Advise students in their search for career-related experiences
- Develop and effectively deliver skill-based learning as it relates to student Career Development, job/internship searches and graduate school applications (e.g. composing targeted applications, interview preparation, and salary negotiation)
- Help students craft a long-term plan for reaching their career objectives
- Assist students in leveraging the use of Handshake, LinkedIn, My Hamilton Connect (Hamilton’s mentorship platform), and other technology in their internship, job, or graduate school search strategy
- Collaborate with Career Center staff to ensure the delivery of targeted content for newsletters, emails and notices for their advising cohort
- Support Career Center staff in planning and staffing events including Fallcoming, admissions panels and Career Center signature programs
- Collaborate with Career Center staff to ensure scaled deployment of the Career Development curriculum, as well as Career Center programs and services, to ensure all students have equal access to career exploration and skills development
- Collaborate with Career Center staff to develop programs and advising methods that support a culture of access, equity, and inclusion.
The approximate breakdown per task includes:
- Career Advising 90%
- Program planning and implementation 10%
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required, relevant advanced degree preferred. Two or more years of work experience in a relevant field. Experience working in college student development is preferred. The successful candidate will be hired as either Assistant or Associate based on prior work experience.

- An understanding of the developmental needs of college-age students and familiarity with a liberal-arts education

- Ability to organize, analyze, prioritize, and problem-solve within a fast-paced office environment
- Excellent writing, public speaking, networking and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to build rapport with students, communicate effectively with a wide range of campus constituencies, and leverage relationships with alumni, parents, faculty, and staff
- Facility/comfort with technology-based search and networking tools (e.g. LinkedIn, customer relationship management type databases, use of Google suite)
- A commitment to sharing information and to collaboration and teamwork with colleagues
- A commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity, including experience developing or supporting initiatives that serve underrepresented groups
- Must be self-directed with the ability to work independently
- Ability to work some nights and weekends
