Western Colorado University is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Assistant Women's Soccer Coach and Junior Mountaineer Camp Director.
Position: Western Colorado University invites applications for the full-time position of Assistant Women's Soccer Coach. The position reports to Head Soccer Coach, works closely with Athletic Administrators, and is responsible for assisting in all operations of the Women's Soccer Program. In addition to coaching the assistant coach will also be the Jr Mountaineer Camp Director who reports to Western's Assistant Athletics Director of Business Operations throughout the summer months.
Responsibilities: The Women's Soccer Coach is responsible for collaborating with the Head Soccer coach to assist with running the program. This position will include but not be limited to: develop practice plans and coaching sessions, monitoring academics, recruiting, coordinating team travel, supporting student athletes (both on and off the field), fundraising, video analysis, scouting reports, camps, etc. The goal of this position is to support the head coach in efforts to lead the program and support its student athletes to provide the best experience possible.
The Junior Mountaineers Camp Director is responsible for administration planning and coordination of Junior Mountaineers Summer Camp (state licensed summer camp for 30-60 youth running during Gunnison Watershed School District time off), including hiring/supervising Junior Mountaineer Camp Staff, planning and implementing staff training week, creating camp curriculum and schedules, communicating with parents, assisting Camp Staff with managing camper behavior, and managing camp budgets. The Camp Director reports to the Western Colorado University Assistant Athletics Director of Business Operations. An important part of this role is to help the Assistant Athletic Director ensure our camps meet regulatory compliance standards.
Minimum Qualifications: Soccer: Bachelor's degree required. Proven Soccer Coaching experience.
Jr Mountaineer Director: Bachelor's degree required. Valid Drivers License. Maintain valid CPR/AED, First Aid, and Medication Administration Certifications (will be provided). Ability to establish good rapport and relationships with players, administrators, staff, alumni and the general public. Ability to stay motivated, professional, patient, positive, respectful, hardworking and flexible. Technical proficiency within the outdoor recreation field. Comfortable speaking in front of large and small groups. Enthusiasm and dedication to learn and create curriculum. Professional written and oral communication skills. Organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Attention to detail. Ability to take initiative. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to present camp lessons/content in an engaging way with a diverse population of learners. Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to safety and security issues.
State Licensing Requirements:
Ability to pass state-licensed required CBI, FBI, Trails background checks
Complete and submit annual health history
Must have completed at least one of the following:
  • A four-year college degree with a major such as recreation, outdoor education, education with a specialty in art, elementary or early childhood education, or a subject in the human service field; or
  • Two years of college training and six months (910 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer, experience, since attending the age of 18, in the care and supervision of four or more children; or
  • Three years (5460 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer, experience and one of the following qualifications:
  • Complete six semester hours, or nine quarter hours in course work from a regionally accredited college or university; or 40 clock hours of training in course work applicable to school-age children and the development approved courses in injury prevention, and playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers within the first nine months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Soccer: Master's Degree preferred. Collegiate coaching experience and knowledge of NCAA Division II Soccer practices and regulations. Must become NCAA II recruiting certified, ability to establish good rapport and relationships with players, administrators, staff, alumni and the general public. Experience coaching goalkeepers.
Jr. Mountaineer: Bachelor or Master's Degree in STEAM, Outdoor Recreation / Education, Parks & Recreation, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Education, or other related fields. Experience working in a youth camp, coaching youth, and/or teaching youth is preferred. Knowledge of CDHS State Licensing Rules & Regulations
Compensation: Salary range of $36,000-$38,000. Position is eligible for an excellent benefits package including health and dental insurance plans with low co-pays and low out of pocket maximums, generous paid time off, a shared contribution retirement plan and, after one year of employment, tuition benefits.
