Salary Range $152,482.00 - $177,896.00

What we are looking for...
The Assistant Vice President, Actuarial directs the rate development, statistical reporting, and analytics activities of the Actuarial department.
Core Functions...
  • Provides management direction relative to the development of rate structures and filings for all AFI lines of business and the timely submission or required statistical reports. Establishes directorate goals, budgets, and methods in compliance with AFI guidelines and regulatory requirements
  • Works through supervisory staff to assure the availability of required resources and the attainment of unit performance and budgetary objectives. Contributes positively to organizational profitability through the efficient utilization of assigned human and financial resources
  • Coordinates with management of other AFI business units to facilitate the accomplishment of departmental and organizational objectives

What's a typical day look like...
  • Directs rate structure development for all AFI lines of business and assures the submission of required statistical reports and filings. Oversees the development of budget and manpower requirements, performance management and evaluation, and staff development
  • Works with the Vice President, Risk Management, and other department management to implement plans/programs and to allocate resources. Guides the development, implementation, and execution of goals and objectives for the Actuarial department
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the directorate and with other AFI departments, regulatory authorities, and industry/professional contacts as required to support the accomplishment of departmental and company goals
  • Conducts detailed analyses of current methods, budgets, programs, and results. Evaluates alternatives and prepares fully documented recommendations regarding proposed changes for review by senior management
  • Assists senior management as requested with special projects, serves on internal committee or project groups, and performs other duties as assigned
  • Directs the reserving practice, including supervising process and methodologies, presenting findings and working with external auditors.

What's required to be considered...
  • BA/BS Degree in a relevant discipline
  • Five years in a leadership position demonstrating significant experience managing physical and human resources (advanced degree may be substituted for two years of experience), or seven years of comparable direct experience in the functions for which the position is accountable. Job experience must demonstrate a detailed knowledge of personal lines insurance rate development and statistical reporting requirements
  • Excellent verbal communications skills, to include the ability to engage in effective counseling with subordinates, the ability to conduct efficient meetings and/or training sessions, and to effectively communicate with external professional contacts (regulators, other insurance company staff, etc.)
  • Excellent written communications skills, to include the ability to produce well-documented recommendations for senior management, policy and procedure statements, and correspondence with external professional contacts (regulators, other insurance company staff, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of MS Outlook and Word
  • Detailed knowledge of MS Excel and SQL Server
  • Detailed knowledge of mapping software, loss analysis software, and policy rating software
  • Ability to learn to utilize AFI’s underwriting, claims and quoting platforms for detailed analysis
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical functions which may include statistical and regression analysis, modeling, and variance analysis
  • Ability to gather and analyze relevant facts and information needed to determine appropriate actions or recommendations for consideration by senior management
  • Demonstrates excellent negotiation skills
  • Demonstrates excellent judgment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate effectively
  • Ability to coordinate activities effectively with other units/departments and to direct the work activities of assigned staff
What professional education requirements do I need to obtain...
  • ACAS or FCAS or equivalent professional designation

The physical requirements and working environment stuff...
  • The work is primarily sedentary. The employee will generally be seated to perform the work, but will also do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items (less than 10 lbs.).
  • The noise level of the primary work location is low. The area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
  • This position is classified as Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The working hours will generally be traditional business hours. However, the incumbent must be available to work extended and/or flexible hours as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks.
