Form of workThe candidate will participate in NIH-funded research projects focusing on the mechanism of HIV induced neurocognitive dysfunction, effects of drugs of abuse in this pathogenic process, and development or testing of preclinical intervention strategies to mitigate the disease.
The studies will be conducted in mice using a model of HIV neurocognitive disease by EcoHIV infection and include participation in the NIDA/NIH National Scorch consortium and related projects. Animal work will be conducted in the ABSL2-level containment vivarium, require mouse behavioral tests, and include animal surgery and animal tissue dissection. The research will focus in part on the role of microglia in HIV neuropathogenesis/drug abuse and include mouse brain tissue dissection and isolation of live microglia for virological, gene expression, and functional characterization. Use of immunohistochemical, RNscope, and related brain tissue analysis techniques for virological and cellular gene expression studies is expected. Studies in vitro including culture of primary microglia and neurons are also expected. Projects will involve an opportunity to learn, with collaborators, the state-of-the-art approaches such as the addictive substance self-administration in mice, sn/sc RNaseq, spatial RNAseq, and bioinformatics.
The candidate must be able to conduct supervised but largely independent research work, summarize and prepare results for publication, present at different research forums, and help in preparation of grant applications. Intellectual input to research projects in the laboratory will be welcome and encouraged. Support will be given in applying to NIH for K awards and other grants consistent with the position.
