Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Research Technician.
In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for performing basic laboratory experiments under general supervision as well as more advanced duties under direct supervision.
Job Responsibilities:
Lab duties - Implements established procedures and protocols to support experiments, and records modifications as needed. Lab duties under general supervision: mouse colony management (animal welfare monitoring, breeding, genotyping), basic microbiology (preparing reagents, working in sterile environment, working with an anaerobic chamber). Assists lab members with advanced procedures. Maintains an electronic lab notebook documenting procedures and recording results of experiments. Participates and performs other related duties as required, including ordering lab consumables and scheduling equipment repair work.
Procedure development - Assists in implementing new procedures and protocols to support experiments. Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved procedures, or modifications to existing protocols and procedures. Maintains and updates technical knowledge.
Team work - Attends weekly group lab meetings and 1:1 meetings with supervisors, cooperate with lab members. Listen carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions, or obtain needed information. Communicate ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner. Maintain the confidentiality of all research information.
Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:
Colony management and animal husbandry under various gnotobiotic and sterile (BSL-1 and BSL-2 level) conditions, including:
- Rearing and weaning of mice and respective documentation
- Changing of food, water and bedding
Assistance with in vivo experiments under various gnotobiotic and sterile (BSL-1 and BSL-2 level) conditions, including:
- Microbiome monitoring under various gnotobiotic/sterile conditions
o Fecal material collection, nucleic acid extractions and downstream analysis including qPCR, culture on selective agar and preparation sequencing
- Mouse gastrointestinal infection experiments:
o Preparation of microbial cultures
o Preparation and administration of drugs, e.g., antibiotics
o Monitoring of infection course and animal health: serum and fecal collection, body weight monitoring, temperature checks, monitoring gut motility
o Microbial monitoring: Processing of microbial samples for infection course analysis:
qPCR
CFU quantification: preparation of selective agar plates; processing, serial dilutions and plating of samples, quantification of bacterial load.
o Necropsy and tissue collections
o Processing of relevant mouse tissues for DNA, RNA and protein analysis (e.g., qPCR, ELISA, nucleic acid isolation and preparation for sequencing)
- Metabolism experiments under various gnotobiotic and sterile (BSL-1 and BSL-2 level) conditions, including
o Preparation of drugs/chemicals
o Preparation of mice for experiments: tail tagging, food/water changes
o Assistance with blood glucose measurements following diverse challenges
o Necropsy: blood and tissue collection and processing
Minimum Qualifications:
This is an entry level trainee position with no experience necessary and a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Life Sciences or a related field is preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor's of Science Degree in Life Sciences and prior experience with in vivo or microbiology experiments.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $43,800.00 - $47,700.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
