Job description

University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, department of Internal Medicine is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to provide support for research by conducting highly technical and specialized scientific research on adverse effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy on the vasculature and investigating mitochondrial function after radiation and chemotherapy in cerebral microvessels, in particular by histology; analyzing data; and disseminating research findings. Key areas of responsibility include experiments, simulations, modeling, or theoretical investigations; data/research analysis and evaluation; dissemination of research results; research proposals/grants; service; and human resources/supervision.
Position Responsibilities
Experiments, Simulations, Modeling or Theoretical Investigations:

  • Treat mice with radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Process tissue samples anc cells after treatment for histology. Section, stain, and image samples, Analyze staining intensity/
  • Perform RNA/DNA purification, RT-PCR and western blots.
  • Perform experiments, simulations, or theoretical investigations.
  • Collect data and evaluate relevance of data.
  • Work independently on basic research tasks with oversight by Faculty
  • Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures.

Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation:
  • Analyze data for relevance and data integrity.
  • Perform basic data analysis techniques.
  • Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work.
  • Utilize Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Photoshop, ImageJ and Graphpad Prism.
  • Develop high-throughput algorithms for analysis of stained tissues.

Dissemination of Research Results:
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication.
  • Present results in departmental seminars and at professional meetings.

Research Proposals/Grants:
  • Contribute to new or continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities.
  • May serve as co-PI on grants or proposals.
  • Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies.
  • Supervise adherence to safety and compliance guidelines when necessary.

Service:
  • Provide service to the scientific community, University and General Public
  • Review submitted manuscripts and research proposals.
  • Consult and collaborate with the research community.
  • Participate in public outreach activities as required by funding sources.
  • May participate in national and international meetings within the discipline.

Human Resources/Supervision:
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
  • May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.
  • Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.

Education Requirements
  • A Doctoral degree is required. A Doctoral degree in Toxicology is preferred.

Experience Requirements
  • Postdoctoral research experience is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication is required.
  • Experience processing tissue for histology, immunohistochemistry and other labeling techniques, imaging and related data analysis is required
  • Experience in working with genetic mouse models is required.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Photoshop, Statview and Graphpad Prisim is required.
  • Previous experience writing manuscripts and presenting at conferences is required.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with RNA/DNA purification, RT-PCR and western blots is highly desirable.
