Statement of the Job:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies (FIRST) are looking for candidates for two tenure-track 6be7a10fa26c4607d87c35fc9863fc22 Positions in experimental and/or theoretical/computational condensed matter physics, materials science, and sensor technologies. While all research specialties will be considered, preferred research areas include physical/chemical sensors, micro/nano devices, quantum sensors/information, soft condensed matter, biosensors, and nanobiophysics.

 

Candidates are being sought who have shown clear evidence of potential for research, teaching, technical communication, and scholarly excellence. Preference may be given to candidates whose record shows active commitment to mentoring or advancing women and/or others who are underrepresented in the field of Physics. Candidates are expected to develop creative and independent research that leads to sponsored research, scholarly publications, and training of undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. students. Candidates should commit to teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The position also requires active, collegial engagement in professional and university service.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop a creative and independent research program that leads to sponsored research, scholarly publications, and training of undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students
  • Participate in collaborative multidisciplinary research projects with other faculty within FIRST and UMaine
  • Teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and advise and recruit students
  • Participate in curriculum development and assessment
  • Engage in university and professional service

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in physics or a related field by date of hire, with expertise in the areas of solid-state physics, materials science, and sensor technologies
  • Strong research record, including publications, consistent with the above description
  • A record of successful teaching commensurate with current professional experience

Preferred:

  • A record of successful performance in collaborative setting
  • Postdoctoral work
  • Familiarity with and/or openness to active engagement teaching strategies
  • Evidence of dedication towards mentoring women and/or other populations that are underrepresented in physics
