The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Arizona (UA) invites candidates to apply for multiple faculty positions across all areas of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) for a start date of Fall 2024. The ECE Department has a comprehensive BS program, a combined 5-year BS-MS program, as well as MS and PhD programs. The ECE Department is ranked in the top 20 percent of public universities in the nation and is in a rapid expansion phase. As a key driver for this expansion in 2023, a new CSE program was launched and the department is engaged in an ambitious, multi-year hiring effort over the next 5 years.
The ECE Department seeks to attract, develop, and retain excellent faculty members with outstanding research credentials and future promise. The department is especially interested in candidates who will contribute to the growth of the CSE program, diversity and excellence of the University's academic community through their research, teaching, and service. We are particularly seeking faculty passionate about working with students and training the next generation of researchers.

We are particularly looking to fill Multiple Positions in the following areas:

  • Theory: Areas of interest include Theory of Computation, Algorithms and Complexity.
  • Programming languages, compilers and runtime systems: Areas of interest include: software for AI/ML systems and next-generation hardware, parallel programming models for heterogenous systems, and reliability and robustness of software.
  • Data Science: All areas of machine learning, Al, and data science will be considered, including theory, NLP, computer vision, robotics, optimization, fairness, and applications to engineering and scientific disciplines.
  • Foundations of AI: Areas of interest include: robotics, machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, theory, and intelligent decision making.
  • Computing Systems: Areas of interest include: all layers of the systems and the architecture stack, IoT/edge computing systems, embedded systems, heterogeneous computing systems as well as emerging areas such as AI accelerators.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successfulcandidate is expected to:

  • Lead a vigorous research program.
  • Advise graduate students in their research area.
  • Lead highly visible research projects that attract substantial external funding.
  • Develop and teach courses within the CSE undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
  • Perform university, public, and professional service.
  • Interact broadly with industry partners.
  • Cultivate collaboration across the College, the University, and the Professional community, and participate in departmental and school-level efforts to promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and to work closely with students to identify and address diversity challenges.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Computer Science and Engineering, whose scholarly work contributes to one or more of the following areas: Theory and Algorithms, Programming Languages, Compilers and Runtime Systems, Data Science, Foundations of AI, Computing Systems. 
  • Knowledge in Computer Science and Engineering, especially those pursuing research in the areas of Data Mining, Databases, Information Systems, Graphics and Vision, and Human-Computer interaction that intersect with the computing systems area. 
  • Knowledge in research areas who complement the existing research strengths in the department with high potential for funding from federal funding agencies, including NSF, NIH, DoD, DARPA, etc.
  • Abilityto lead in cross-disciplinary collaborations.
  • A commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • A willingness to collaborate with others in the department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree conferred before August 1, 2024 in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. 
  • Must be able to provide education credentials during the offer discussions.
  • No experience beyond the Ph.D. is required for Appointment at Assistant Professor Rank.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ideal candidates will have an established record of high-quality research publications at top venues.
  • The ideal Assistant Professor candidate will have shown definite evidence of growth in scholarly or professional achievement.
