Job Description:


Title: Assistant Professor - Biotechnology


Unit: MCCC Day Faculty


Department: Biotechnology, STEM Division


Reports to: Dean of STEM


Date: February 9, 2024


General Summary:


The Biotechnology Faculty is a creative, knowledgeable, and flexible individual who will develop and teach Biotech courses within the STEM Division. The faculty member will work with the Dean of STEM, the Biotech Department Chair, and other faculty to teach courses that provide education for the Biotechnology students in the Biotech program. The faculty will assist with the development of student learning outcomes and assessment strategies and will participate in college service and student advisement. The faculty member is committed to inclusive excellence and diversity, and continuous professional improvement.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Teach classes such as computer programs for biotechnology, microbiology for industrial applications, immunology, and general chemistry courses.
  • Participate in ongoing curriculum review, assessment, and development
  • Develop instructional material consistent with course, program, and institutional student learning outcomes
  • Develop and apply instructional methods that engage a diverse student body of varying learning styles and abilities, and promote critical thinking and other employable skills
  • Develop and apply assessment strategies that maximize the learning process and effectively measure student learning outcomes
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to recruit and retain students and assist in community and industry outreach
  • Supplement instruction with new classroom technologies
  • Embrace the dynamic nature of the biotech industry, remain current with industry trends and needs, and incorporate that knowledge into the curriculum
  • Utilize high-impact practices such as learning communities, capstone courses, undergraduate research, service learning, and collaborative projects as part of pedagogical practices.
  • Participate in division, College committees, and activities
  • Work collaboratively with faculty from all disciplines
  • Teach classes and attend meetings on both MCC campuses
  • Provide student advising
  • Fulfill terms of the faculty contract as set out in the Agreement between the Board of Higher Education and the Massachusetts Community College Council/Massachusetts Teachers Association.


Requirements:


  • Master's Degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a closely related field, or Bachelor's Degree with equivalent experience in industry or government.
  • Successful teaching experience, preferably at the post-secondary level
  • Experience developing academic courses and curriculum
  • Commitment to continuous professional improvement
  • Ability to apply innovative instructional approaches, in order to achieve stated course objectives and student learning outcomes
  • Commitment to integrate real-life applications and skills into the curriculum
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty from different disciplines and different academic institutions
  • Openness to interdisciplinary instruction
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Doctoral Degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field
  • Biotechnology industry experience, networking with biotechnology industry professionals a plus.
  • Experience in working in a clean room environment
  • Successful teaching at a community college
  • Experience with a variety of instructional methods, and willingness to develop and implement online courses;
  • Student advising experience
  • Experience using high-impact practices such as learning communities, capstone courses, undergraduate research, service learning, and collaborative projects as part of pedagogical practices
  • Bilingual skills a plus

Please note, the faculty rank of Assistant Professor may be subject to change in accordance with Article XVII of the MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Salary Range: $52,970 is the starting salary with a Master's Degree; actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Employees of Middlesex Community College are considered employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and receive benefits, which include:
