Job Summary
Crossroads Community Center is hiring an Assistant Pre-school Teacher!
We are seeking an Assistant Pre-School Teacher for our Pre-Kindergarten 4- and 5-year-old program. The primary responsibility of the pre-school assistant is to always provide supervision and safety of the children. Each day the preschool assistant is responsible to assist in signing the children in/out of class, ensure that a Child Waiver Form is completed by the parent/guardian. The Parkside classroom at Crossroads is full of learning activities and opportunities for growth, both academically and socially. The assistant will support the teacher by helping to provide art, singing, circle time exploration, and structured games and activities, with a monthly based theme. The assistant will work with the pre-school teacher to develop a cooperative, supportive, and enthusiastic atmosphere. The ideal candidate would have experience working with pre-school and/or elementary children and with diverse populations.
Work Schedule:
The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 9:00am-1:30pm., 4-week summer component.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for helping the teacher plan and implementing an age-appropriate inclusive pre-school program, for a diverse group of preschool age children with a 4-week summer component.
  • Assist the teacher in planning and implementing activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of the children in the program.
  • Always provide supervision of the children.
  • Work with the teacher to provide adequate equipment and activities.
  • Ensure equipment and the room is clean, well maintained, and always safe. Report any concerns to the lead teacher, coordinator, or Center supervisor.
  • Prepare daily materials for the children under the direction of the teacher.
  • Set up and clean up the room daily, under the direction of the teacher.
  • Support the teacher in helping to introduce math and literacy concepts.
  • Be familiar with emergency procedures.
  • Assist in transitions (going from one activity to the next).
  • Encourage children to use words to resolve conflicts.
  • Encourage children to take turns and share.
  • Support the teacher in activities for children including songs, games, and storytelling.
  • Build children's self-esteem.
  • Assist teacher in establishing routines and provide positive guidance.
  • Provide a safe and secure inclusive environment for children to feel comfortable.
  • Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children understand.
  • Assist with circle time, story time.
  • Assist with leading children into the gym, overseeing children with teacher.
  • Encourages creativity of children and helps foster a positive environment in the classroom.
  • Performs related duties, as assigned.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
  • Work is performed with moderate supervision.
  • Job responsibilities are clearly defined, however, there may be opportunities for decision making with program activity.
  • Program will include working with a Lead Teacher.

Qualifications
  • Prior work experience or education in recreation or a related field.
  • Early Childhood Education, or a combination of ECE knowledge, training and experience working in a preschool setting.
  • First Aid, CPR, AED or other specialized training or experience will be required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to children, parents, and City staff.
  • Experience and/or training are desired, specific to the responsibilities and competencies of this role, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, bi-lingual preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development and early education theories and practices.
  • Ability to work in a busy and occasionally noisy environment.

This is a variable, non-exempt, non-union position.
Definition of a Variable Employee:
  • Average weekly hours are 22.5 hours.
  • Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
  • NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).
