Position Summary: The Department of Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering (CGEE) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in Geotechnical Engineering, with a focus on frozen ground engineering, starting fall 2024. The position requires a strong commitment to teaching, developing a strong research program, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and performing service. Candidates must have a BS degree in Civil or Geological Engineering (CE/GE), preferably from an ABET-accredited program, and Ph.D. in CE/GE or a closely-related discipline. Prior post-doctoral research and teaching experience in an undergraduate program is preferred. The faculty member is expected to develop new courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and serve students in the CE and GE program. UAF is the major research campus in the University of Alaska system and a Land, Sea, Air, and Space Grant institution. We seek candidates who will strengthen our degree programs through quality teaching and research and appreciate the unique geography and climate of Interior Alaska. Fairbanks is referred to as the "Golden Heart" of Alaska and located in between the Alaska and Brooks mountain ranges and is noted for its wealth of outdoor activities, northern lights viewing in the winter, and midnight sun during the summer.

The CGEE Department is a unit of the UAF College of Engineering and Mines (CEM), consisting of two undergraduate programs: Civil (CE) and Geological Engineering (GE). The CE Program has been ABET-accredited since 1940 and currently offers concentrations in Structures, Geotechnical, Environmental, Water Resources, Transportation, and Arctic Engineering, and Engineering Design and Construction. The GE program has been ABET-accredited since 1941, and provides students with the background necessary to mitigate geohazards like landslides, ensure safe construction at a project site, find and manage groundwater, and locate mineral resources. Opportunities are available for interdisciplinary research within CEM, the Alaska Infrastructure Development Center (AIDC), the Institute of Northern Engineering (INE), and with the College of Science and Mathematics and other UAF research institutes.

To thrive in this role, a successful applicant must:
Enjoy interacting with a diverse student body, be self-directed, and have excellent time management skills;
Able to develop an independent research program with Alaska focus, ideally with an emphasis on frozen ground/Arctic Engineering;
Place a high priority on and commitment to excellence in teaching, academic advising, and promoting student retention;
Have the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally;
Integrate the mission and vision of UAF and and the College of Engineering and Mines into professional activities; and
Integrate research and professional experience into classroom/coursework.
