POSITION SUMMARY

The assistant coach for Men's Lacrosse is responsible for assisting the head Men's Lacrosse Coach in implementing and directing all phases of a competitive NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse program at DePauw University. This includes recruiting quality student-athletes, organizing and planning practices and game strategies, scouting, coaching, scheduling, budgeting and planning team travel in compliance with University, conference and NCAA rules and regulations. This position will have a secondary responsibility within the athletics department.

  • Mentor student-athletes to ensure athletics and academic success.
  • Schedule competition, make transportation and lodging arrangements for team travel

  • Monitor student-athletes' academic progression.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Experience: Collegiate playing experience in Men's Lacrosse highly desirable. Leadership experience preferred. Previous Lacrosse Coaching experience (any level) preferred.

Computer Skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Front Rush, Internet, Google Apps, other programs as determined by specific sport responsibilities.

Communication/Language: Basic: Ability to read, listen to and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write and communicate simple correspondence.

 

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

Certificates & Licenses: A valid US driver's license is required. Certification in first aid/CPR/AED is required by the first date of appointment and must be maintained throughout the appointment.

Other Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Commitment to and history of strong belief in mentoring students and demonstrated experience working with young adults
  • Desire to work in a rural, small-school environment devoted to providing liberal arts education, building community, and helping students prepare for their future careers
  • During the playing and practice season (generally 18 - 30 weeks in a 52 week period), when this individual's primary responsibility is coaching a sport, the coach will stand/walk/sit for 3-6 hours per day at practice, perform office tasks (meet with student-athletes and colleagues and respond to correspondence) for 5 hours per day, and on the phone and computer (primarily recruiting) 1-2 hours per day.
  • Outside of the playing and practice season or on days in which there is not scheduled practice or competition, the coach will sit 5 hours per day, walk/stand the remainder of the day, and conduct business both in-person and on the phone.
  • They must be able to enact the emergency action plan at practice and competition, supervise students on day and overnight travel, and organize/manage travel plans for themself and the team.
  • A coach is required to create and respond to correspondence (email and Microsoft office/Google docs) and maintain electronic recruiting records.
  • They must be able to provide basic demonstrations of skills and tactics, describe any modifications they are unable to demonstrate, apply appropriate game rules to the teaching and practicing and monitor for safety while coaching.
  • They must be able to recruit student-athletes, which requires phone calls and traveling off-campus, and evaluating written, oral and digital information from prospective student-athletes, and interact with outside interests in the form of DePauw alumni, high school coaches, club team coaches, and parents during the recruitment of student athletes. The coach must interact with colleagues from Admissions to ensure effective visits by prospective student athletes, which includes scheduling their student athletes for host training, securing hosts, and coordinating communication between themselves, the admissions office and the prospective student athlete.
