This position requires someone with top-notch writing, fact-checking and organizational skills, capable of quickly turning around professionally written articles that present evidence-based information about nutritional trends for our audience of industry experts. As the Assistant Managing Editor, you will shepherd magazines from the idea stage through story assignment, editing, fact checking, and proofreading. This position involves collaboration with a graphic designer, other editors in the department, and our sales and marketing teams.
Additional responsibilities include interviewing, for both digital and print audiences, industry professionals. Occasional travel is required, to attend large trade meetings throughout the year. An ability to write clearly and accurately about complex topics and to generate creative headlines is a must. Publishing experience and familiarity with the latest in nutritional science and AMA style are helpful, but we are willing to train someone with exceptional aptitude.
Responsibilities include:

• Identify and assign articles for freelance writers and industry contributors and edit for thoroughness, accuracy and readability
• Coordinate content for magazine issues and special publications, including our handbook, often several at different stages of production
• Coordinate with graphic designer and proofread completed pages prior to publication
• Identify news relevant to our audience and work with team to post to our website several times a day.
• Work with editorial team and/or freelance writers to develop compelling digital media, including special video features and podcasts
• Keep current on developments and trends in industry

Qualifications:

• Minimum of BA/BS or equivalent editing/journalism experience
• 3+ years writing/publishing experience
• Demonstrated aptitude in writing clearly and accurately about complex topics
• Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Superior organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong typing and computer skills
• Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced, fluid environment, meeting tight deadlines and high expectations
• Familiarity with complex terminology, AP style and search engine optimization techniques a plus
