Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for an Assistant Maintenance Technician to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative team. The successful candidate will perform traffic control within work sites, operate assigned equipment, and perform other general labor duties.
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Works with the public in a courteous and professional manner, providing information and answering questions.
  • In accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as adopted by the State of Washington, State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and County Standards & Policies, fabricates standard street signs, installs and maintains signs, sign components, traffic control signs, road markings, streetlights, school flashers and crosswalk flashers using a variety of equipment.
  • Drives and operates a variety of equipment such as, but not limited to:
    1. 5 yd Dump and Flat Bed
    2. Propane Torch
    3. Forklift
    4. Air Compressor/Jackhammer
    5. Reader board truck & trailer
    6. Chainsaw
    7. Extruded Thermoplastic Pre-Melter Cart
    8. Paint Gun on Striper Truck
    9. Pressure washer
    10. GPS data collectors and similar devices
    11. Utility Locate Detection Device
    12. Computer & associated sign making equipment & software
    13. Computer inventory systems
    14. Airless sprayer
    15. Paint grinder
  • Uses desktop computers, portable computers, Geospatial Positions Systems (GPS), other devices and equipment for asset tracking, maintenance management and inventory.
  • Reports outages for traffic signals and street lighting per maintenance contracts. Provides technical support and assistance to Traffic Engineering through tasks such as traffic counts, pedestrian counts, material collection, speed studies, sight distance studies, or similar activities.
  • Maintains and organizes supplies needed for sign maintenance in work truck.

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years' experience in road maintenance, construction, traffic control, and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Must possess a Washington Traffic Flagging Card or obtain one within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must hold a valid First Aid Card or obtain within three (3) months of employment.
  • Current Washington State Driver's License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
  • A valid Washington State Class A, Commercial Driver's License with air brake. A special endorsement for tanker must be obtained within six months of hire date.
  • Work toward obtaining International Municipal Signal Association Certification, Level 1 Signs and Marking within probationary period. Ability to use computers equipment and related software programs is required.
  • Knowledge of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of procedures and practices related to work zone traffic control.
  • Basic knowledge of traffic control devices and road systems.
  • Experience installing and maintaining street lighting, school beacons and crosswalk beacons.
  • Experience installing and maintaining traffic signs.
  • Experience installing permanent traffic markings such as stop bars, turn arrows, and parking lot markings.
