Located on a bucolic 515-acre campus in Marin County, San Domenico is California's oldest independent school. Comprising individuals from around the world, our student body is the foundation of our dynamic and diverse cultural and academic environment. In this unique setting, our diverse community of 680 students, including 140 boarding students from over 20 countries, flourishes as scholars, innovators, and responsible global citizens.

This is an exciting and pivotal time at San Domenico, as we welcome a new Head of School for the 2024-25 academic year and embark on a strategic planning process. In this context, the Assistant Head for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will play a vital role in shaping a future that is both equitable and ambitious, drawing on our rich heritage of forward-thinking inclusivity and benefiting our students and the institution.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of School, this leadership position is integral to advancing our long-held values and embedding them in every facet of our school's operations. The Assistant Head for DEI will work closely with leaders, educators, and professional staff, influencing and steering our community towards a deepened commitment to diversity, equity, and Inclusion.

Primary responsibilities include:

● Partnering with the Head of School and Senior Leadership to provide direction and support to different sectors of the school in building systems that support equity and Inclusion, including in:

• Admissions
• The Indexed Tuition (financial aid) Program
• Boarding Department
• Human Resources
• Communications
• The Family Association

● Actively participate in the life of the school, including by attending a wide range of events and activities, cultivating meaningful interactions with students and student groups, and fostering a sense of belonging and engagement.

● Collaborating with Trustees and other community members on the Board’s newly formed
DEI Task Force to ensure that issues of equity and Inclusion are deeply understood and appreciated; to act as a strategic partner in creating near- and long-term goals; to advocate at the highest level of the school in order to fulfill those goals; and to strive to make sure that the Board’s own practices reflect these commitments.

● With academic leadership and teachers, supporting the ongoing development of diverse and inclusive curriculum, pedagogy, and programs.

● With Senior Leadership, continuing the work of building and delivering a program of
DEI-specific professional development for faculty and staff.

● With the Director of Residential Life, developing a program of DEI education and professional development for the resident faculty team and Prefects (the dorms’ student leaders) that is specifically responsive to the needs of the school’s international boarding population.

Attributes and Qualifications

The successful candidate will:
● be a seasoned DEI practitioner with the demonstrated capacity to develop and execute a strategic vision for long-term impact while achieving short-term wins that advance the school's goals.

● be an experienced educator who finds joy in working with Kindergarten - 12th grade students.

● be a thoughtful leader with high emotional intelligence (EQ).
● be a collaborative team builder with demonstrated capacity to establish rapport across diverse stakeholder groups, including faculty and staff, students, parents/guardians, and Trustees.

● be well organized, with a proven ability to manage several complex projects at once.
● have excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

● understand how to collect, organize, and leverage data to inform decision-making and measure progress.

● have a Bachelor’s degree (required; Master’s preferred).
● have five or more years' experience in a similar DEI leadership position working with historically marginalized groups, ideally in an educational setting.
● have experience serving on, or working with, nonprofit boards (preferred).

Compensation
Salary range is $150,000 - $175,000 annually, commensurate with skill set and experience. This position is classified as exempt. The School offers an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/matching 403b retirement plan and daily lunch on work days.
