Assistant Greenhouse Manager

Goal: The Assistant Greenhouse Manager will play a key role in growing quality plants for our customers. They will learn all aspects of greenhouse production under the guidance of our Greenhouse Manager. Skills will be developed that would allow the individual to become our Greenhouse Manager if the opportunity arose.

Required Skills:

• Always be honest and act with integrity.

• Be at work on the days scheduled and arrive at work on time.
• Physically fit. Able to lift, carry and set down on the ground 50 lbs repeatedly. (ex. carrying fertilizer bags and large hanging baskets.) Able to work on ladders and roofs. Ability to work on your feet all day.
• Willing to assist with unexpected needs. We are a small business and will need help with tasks in all departments throughout the year. This includes after hours emergencies (ex. power outage / heat failure in winter).

Job Description:

Crop Production

• Monitor and adjust, heat, humidity, light and water on greenhouse crops.
• Learn to monitor, identify, prevent, and treat pest damage on plants. Includes all insect and disease pests.
• Obtain pesticide applicator license.
• Mix and apply pesticides.

• Identify and solve plant nutritional deficiencies.
• Create fertilizer formulations and insure they are applied properly.

• Understand and assist in all stages of crop production - including planting, watering and displaying for sale.
• Assist in future crop planning

Greenhouse Team Leadership

• Support and work alongside the General Manager to achieve greenhouse goals
• Teach and lead tasks to be completed by other greenhouse team employees.
• Communicate clearly and kindly with co-workers.
• Encourage and motivate other team members.

Assist with facilities

• Service and use tractor.
• Operate automated machinery.
• Assist with greenhouse and building maintenance projects.
• Cover greenhouses with plastic poly covering seasonally.
• Open and close greenhouses.
• Operate ventilation and shade cloth on greenhouses.
• Able to open or close the nursery facilities, as needed.
• Learn about and assist with use and maintenance of heat and irrigation systems on site.

Assist with business planning

• Develop a wide understanding of our business, local economy and industry that allows for insightful input regarding:
• Making our greenhouse processes more efficient and profitable.
• Selecting new varieties and crops to grow for our customers.

This is a full time position. 40 hours per week. Overtime paid. It is not unusual for overtime hours to be worked during select busy seasons.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
