The purpose of this job is to perform advanced supervisory and administrative work overseeing the activities of assigned divisions within the Fire Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. - Supports the Chief in the execution of department strategic plans, implementation of department-wide initiatives, and direction of operational activities; coordinates major projects and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring, and discipline of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries; and acts as liaison between employees and management.
- Manages day-to-day operation of divisions operating within the department, through communication and collaboration with subordinate staff.
- Assists in preparation of the annual department budget and reports, as assigned.
- Participates in and assists with development and implementation of departmental policies, goals, and procedures.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Work requires managing and monitoring work performance by directing multiple groups of employees across more than one business function, including making decisions on hiring, disciplinary actions, evaluating program/work objectives and effectiveness, conducting performance evaluations, and realigning work and staffing assignments, as needed.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent. Associate degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years experience in a command-level position, or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license, CPR certification, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license.
- Must obtain or possess and maintain Missouri Division of Fire Safety Fire Officer II certifications within one year of hire.
- Employees hired after October 1, 2019, are required to maintain a permanent residence within a fifty (50) mile radius of Fire Station 1, 201 Orr St., Columbia, MO 65201 within 18 months of hire.

- Incumbents are frequently required to drive, grasp, reach stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl during emergency situations.
- Incumbents may be required to wear PPE, a respirator, and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Hours/Days
Generally Monday through Friday; 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Occasional special assignments will fall outside normal business hours.

$94,253 Min.-$119,701 Mid.-$145,150 Max. Salary, Commensurate with training and experience
