Job description

The Department of Recreation at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director, Aquatics. The University, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, is a public institution known for its teaching, research, and public service. UVA Recreation has four recreation centers and over 40 acres of outdoor courts and fields to serve fitness and wellness needs of students, faculty and staff.
Reporting to the Director of Aquatics, the Assistant Director supports the daily operations, staffing, programs, special events and maintenance needs of two aquatic facilities located at the Aquatic & Fitness Center and the North Grounds Recreation Center.

Responsibilities include:

Staffing Operations

  • Assumes primary roles in delegating and ensuring completion of tasks, staff communication systems, schedule assessment and troubleshooting, schedule modification management, onsite quality assurance assessments.

  • Supports daily part-time aquatic staffing (65+ lifeguards) operations ensuring qualified staffing resources, service consistency, and full safety compliance and risk management are consistently achieved at both aquatic facilities.

  • Supports director with part-time staff supervision to include recruiting, hiring, training, development, teambuilding, accountability, and performance evaluation.

  • Serves as a primary lifeguard back-up staff supporting unfilled shifts during schedule vacancies, downtimes, weather emergencies, or other unforeseen staff emergency needs.

  • Serves as primary manager of annual required lifeguard training and certification records.

  • Coordinates annual staff recognition and internal and external team building program.

Maintenance and Sanitation

  • Responsible for supporting daily maintenance operations and management of comprehensive aquatic cleanliness plans.

  • Supports and collaborates with aquatic technicians for both aquatic facilities.

  • Supports director in managing aquatic facility improvement projects and workorders.

  • Supports documentation and management of pool chemical and water quality systems; records water quality reports as designated.

  • Supports quarterly aquatic internal audit process; submit to meet deadlines.

Operations

  • Supports director on all aquatic-related events and reservations to assure service and quality.

  • Responsible for support of Varsity Swim/Dive Team spaces, practices, and competitions; onsite for all competitions.

  • Assists in supporting partnerships and success of academic, athletic, internal programs, and other organizations at the University.

  • Supports director and aquatic technicians with inventory, ordering and stocking supplies and parts, as needed.

  • Build partnerships with facility management, aquatic industry vendors, and contractors.

Risk Management

  • Supports the director in managing the quality assurance of all the following risk management processes, plans, and resources: Staff training, certifications, and compliance; Access control system, alarm system; and Emergency action plans.

  • Maintains all aquatic-related safety and compliance certifications and standards to support both daily operations and pool technician responsibilities effectively.

  • Assumes leadership and organization of departmental Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification program.

  • Supports compliant recordkeeping of safety certifications.

Programming

  • Supports planning, execution, compliance, and assessment of all aquatic programs.

  • Supports planning and facilitation of swim lessons.

  • Assists with aquatic program hiring, training, and scheduling.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Leisure Studies, Physical Education, Athletic or related field. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Experience Required: Experience supervising or scheduling part-time staff, Previous aquatic/pool maintenance or related experience,

Licensure required: American Red Cross CPR/AED certification. Current Lifeguarding certification from American Red Cross.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Experience overseeing part-time staff in an educational environment, experience supporting swim meets or competitions, aquatic/pool technician experience, experience leading swim lessons, experience leading Lifeguarding/ CPR/First Aid certification programs.

Licensure preferred: Lifeguard instructor certification (or ability to attain in first 30 days) as well as AFO/CPO.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.

Ability to physically maintain an American Red Cross lifeguard certification meeting all physical requirements.
