This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Geologist for the Asheville, NC location. This candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in Construction Materials Testing, Special Inspection, and Geotechnical projects.

Your Impact

• Perform testing on general building sites and facilities
• Interpret project plans and specifications for compliance with projects requirements
• Perform soil density testing using both nuclear gauge and sand cone in accordance with ASTM and project specifications on site at commercial construction projects
• Perform sampling and testing of concrete in accordance with ASTM and project specifications
• Prepare and submit written field reports summarizing daily activities/observations and density calculations and results
• Observe proofrolls, undercut operations, perform footing inspections with dynamic cone penetrometer, and inspect rebar
• Test and work in accordance with Company safety policies
• Monitor work procedures for compliance with project specifications
• Interact with client representative (supervisors, foremen, project managers, engineers, etc.) at project sites
• Perform analysis or calculations to check accuracy, applicability and reasonableness of testing data
• Perform engineering investigation and design support tasks under the direction of senior engineering professionals.
• Develop field data in support of geotechnical investigations and design as directed.
Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance on various design and construction issues involving rock and soil mechanics, and investigating subsurface and geological conditions to design and build foundations, earth structures, and pavement sub-grades.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or closely related discipline.
• 0 - 2 years of CMT, CQA, or related field experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as critical thinking skills, a must.
• Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team, to meet business objectives.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
• Must pass drug test, physical and background check and possess a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy.
• Will be routinely lifting equipment, installing soil borings with hand augers, and carrying laboratory sample coolers etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

• ACI, NCDOT, or other industry certifications
• Professional certification track
