The assistant teacher works under the supervision of the lead teacher to ensure children have the academic, social-emotional growth and development of the children in their care. They will ensure the classroom is a safe, equitable, developmentally appropriate, and a stimulating educational environment for all children. Primary function of the assistant teacher is to work with parents, children and other teachers to improve students' experience and meet teaching objectives. Additionally, the assistant teacher assist the lead teacher with homework assignments, daily activities and the curriculum to create opportunities that meet the changing needs of the developing children.
Duties and responsibilities
● Ensures the preparation and implementation of classroom routines, procedures and daily activities.
● Serves as the assistant of the classroom/center.
● Responsible for assisting in the planning, implementing and evaluating developmentally appropriate curriculum and lesson plans and activities through learning centers which include art, music, physical activities, language and literacy, sensory and self-help according to NAEYC Accreditation Standards.
● Assisting in implementing curriculum plans according to IL Early Learning Development, and DCFS Standards, and Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP).
● Monitors the growth and development of children through the ongoing collection of assessment data.
● Maintaining a physical environment to promote growth and development of the whole child in each of the developmental domains: physical, cognitive, language, creative, and social/emotional.
● Assist in Observing, recording and assessing children’s developmental levels and progress in all areas of development.
● Communicating with parents concerning needs, progress, and behavior of children.
● Establishes positive, respectful and reciprocal relationships with children and families.
● Works collaboratively with the center’s director, staff, and colleagues
● Ensures the health, safety and well-being of all children daily.
● Caring for the needs of children in personal hygiene areas including feeding, diapering/toileting, dressing, lifting and carrying children.
● Maintaining safe and sanitary facilities and environment.
● Providing assistance in a learning environment
● Maintaining attendance records and meals in accordance with Licensing and USDA Child Food Care program.
Additional Duties
● Includes (Monitors/Assigns) all job responsibilities of assistant teacher.
● Document and complete daily reports for all children.
● Attend parent-teacher conferences as needed.
● Attend monthly staff meetings.
● Maintain training hours and certifications (staff credentials, CPR and First Aid, SIDS, SIUDS, in-service, etc.)
● Perform additional duties assigned by the Director.
● Maintain compliance with the school’s employee handbook.
● Reinforce the values of Reflections Academy
Qualifications
● Must complete state required entry level training courses (DCFS 15 Hours)
● Preferred Child Care experience but not required.
● Prefer candidates to have at least 1 year of child development experience in a nursery school, kindergarten, or licensed day care center.
● Must become a member of Illinois Gateways or (Apply for IL Gateways Entitlements within the first 30 days of employment).
● Minimum of one (1) year in a teacher, assistant teacher, or teacher’s aide position preferred.
● Able to work independently, as well as work as a team member
● Able to provide clear verbal and written communication.
● Able to follow written and verbal instructions.
● Must exercise sound rationale.
● Demonstrate great listening skills.
● Learn the policies and procedures of Reflections Childcare Academy
Physical requirements
● Lift up to 35 pounds
● Sit on the floor with children.
● Must be able to move from the sitting to the walking position quickly.
