Job description

Tewksbury Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a self-motivated and visionary registered nurse to join our dynamic team as the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO). The selected candidate will provide strategic leadership and clinical direction for medical nursing care services. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of critical functions, including overseeing infection control, staff development, employee health, and clinical nurse specialist services. You will collaborate closely with various departments to ensure seamless coordination and delivery of nursing care. Acting as the nursing leader in designated services, you will keep the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) informed of essential matters and act as a liaison between departments to facilitate smooth operations.
As a key member of the leadership team, you will be responsible for managing financial resources within your assigned services, optimizing cost-effective patient care while driving improved patient outcomes. Your role will also involve fostering a culture of open communication, both within the nursing services team and with external stakeholders, to enhance patient care delivery and uphold the hospital's positive reputation in the community.
Please Note: This is a full-time 37.5-hour position, that will be working 1st Shift- Monday through Friday. The days off will be Saturday and Sunday
Please note (requirements): This position requires the selected candidate to be a Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
• Provide strategic leadership for medical nursing care services ensuring high-quality and cost- effective patient care.
• Oversee infection control, staff development, employee health, and clinical nurse specialist services, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards.
• Act as the nursing leader within designated services, keeping the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) informed of critical issues and facilitating cross-departmental collaboration.
• Assists with developing and updating nursing policies and procedures in line with accepted practices and regulatory requirements.
• Assists with investigations and utilizes internal and external resources to stay current on technologies, trends, regulations, legislation, and political activities affecting Nursing Practice.
• Lead efforts to maintain and improve interdisciplinary communication and cooperation, promoting a positive image of Nursing Services.
• Conduct regular rounds on all medical units to ensure safe and quality nursing practices are adhered to.
• Manage staffing levels based on patient acuity, census, and available staff, utilizing both organic and agency personnel.
• Oversee the nursing quality program, addressing patient safety issues such as falls, pressure injuries, medication errors, and restraints.
• T rack and control all medical nursing units' overtime within budget limits, while also managing the financial resources of assigned services.
• Foster professional development of staff and ensure competence in clinical practice, recommending and tracking employee relations issues including discipline.
• Represent Senior Management, Nursing Services, and the organization to community and professional groups.
• Collaborate with Medical and Psychiatric Staff to evaluate and update patient care services, acting as a liaison between departments.
• Utilize verbal and written communication effectively with Administration, Physicians, Managers, and staff to maintain optimal flow of information and address issues relative to patient care and the healthcare environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in nursing or a related field.
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience in nursing or in a hospital/healthcare setting.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee relations.
• Experience in public sector management is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated experience in managing nursing budgets, resource allocation, and financial planning.
• Proficiency in developing and implementing nursing policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
• Proven track record of leading quality improvement initiatives and achieving positive patient outcomes.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to use data to drive decision-making and performance improvement efforts.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
• Knowledge of current healthcare trends, technologies, and best practices in nursing care delivery.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
About Tewksbury Hospital:
Tewksbury Hospital operates a 375-bed facility and a campus of over 700 acres of land. Its patient care services are provided under the auspices of the Department of Public Health and Mental Health. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for the administration of a Joint Commission accredited LTAC hospital that provides high quality, comprehensive treatment, care, and comfort to adults with chronic medical and mental illness. A full range of services are provided including 24/7 Nursing, Nurse Practitioners, Medicine as well as psychiatric and psychological services, a 6-chair dialysis suite, clinical laboratory, radiology, respiratory care, nutrition, speech/language, pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation and arts, and pharmacy. Qualifications:
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) five (5) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in a particular specialty (i.e. scientific, professional, or technical) and must possess current license and/or registration requirements established for the performance of the position, of which (B) at least one (1) year must have been in a project management, supervisory or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience.
II. A Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.
III. A Graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the (A) required experience.
IV. A Doctorate degree in a related field may be substituted for four (4) years of the (A) required experience.
