Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks a lawyer to handle appeals for the State of Iowa as an Assistant Solicitor General.
Description
Lawyers in the Solicitor General Division primarily handle the State's most complex appellate litigation. That includes defending State laws and rules, suing the federal government to keep it within its constitutional and statutory limits, and protecting the public by representing the State and its officers in major civil litigation. The Division works closely with the office's Farm & Freedom Division, which most frequently represents the State in trial court. Assistant Solicitors General also review legislation, give legal training, speak at conferences, and prepare amicus briefs.
Lawyers in this elite unit must be creative and motivated. Assistant Solicitors General are expected to run their own cases, but they have access to the rest of the Office of the Attorney General for support. Assistant Solicitors General regularly practice before the Iowa Court of Appeals; the Iowa Supreme Court; federal district courts; the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals; and the U.S. Supreme Court. Requirements
This position requires a license to practice law in Iowa; a dedication to public service; and demonstrated research, writing, and oral-advocacy skills. The most competitive applicants will have a combination of experience as an appellate lawyer, judicial clerk, and law-journal staffer.
Pay and Benefits

Salary ranges from $57,636.80-$139,318.40 depending on experience.
Graduation from an accredited law school and five years of successful and responsible experience in the practice of law;
OR
three years of experience in the practice of law in the Department of Justice is considered as qualifying experience.
