Job Duties:About Us:
A Government Entity has played a vital role in shaping Ohio's past and present and the work it does today helps chart the state's future. The office consists of nearly 30 distinct sections that advocate for consumers and victims of crime, assist the criminal justice community, provide legal counsel for state offices and agencies, and enforce certain state laws. In these and other capacities, staff members interact with tens of thousands of Ohioans each year.
What You'll Do:
A Government Entity's Collections Enforcement Section is one of the nation's largest premier government collection practices representing more than 300 state agencies, institutions, boards, commissions, public university hospitals, as well as numerous political subdivisions to resolve and collect delinquent debts. The second largest section in the Ohio Attorney General's office, we are a fast-paced, high-volume practice that utilizes both internal staff, external vendors, and Special Counsel to recover a variety of debts such as taxes, fines, university debts, and economic development loans. Most debts we collect are subject to statutory offset programs which are managed by the section.
Our Assistant Attorneys General provide legal services and counsel to clients and business operations staff of Collections and other sections of the office on bankruptcy and creditors' rights issues. Additionally, they are tasked with specific client portfolios and legal service programs including the state Offer-in-Compromise program, Foreclosure defense recovery, Auditor of State Findings for Recovery, Medicaid Estate Recovery and Crime Victims fund recovery. Our Assistant Attorneys General represent client interests in collection matters before Ohio and nationwide bankruptcy courts and state court insolvency proceedings and actively negotiate settlements and provide financial analysis and assessment of debts to clients and other stakeholders to allow informed decisions on debt resolution.
We are currently seeking an energetic attorney with at least 3-5 years' experience in debtor-creditor law who is licensed both in Ohio and federal court. The candidate should possess strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate complex legal matters and effectively solve problem solutions. The candidate must have the ability to manage a fast-paced high-volume practice by appropriately prioritizing tasks, using good judgment, and communicating effectively with the management team. Experience in bankruptcy and creditors' rights is strongly preferred. This position will work a hybrid in-person/remote schedule. There may be changes to this schedule based on training and operational needs. The headquarter location is our Toledo, OH office.
